Controller

SnoutNew York, NY
$160,000 - $180,000Hybrid

About The Position

Snout is seeking its first Controller, a foundational accounting role within a fast-growing, venture capital-backed technology company focused on improving access to veterinary care. This hybrid role, based in the New York metro area, offers the opportunity to build and design the in-house finance function from the ground up, transitioning from a fractional accounting provider to a robust internal team. The Controller will own the general ledger, monthly close, and the integrity of the company's books, playing a crucial role in financial statement delivery for a committed debt facility and managing operations at a significant transaction scale. This is a hands-on, AI-empowered individual contributor role with the potential to grow into leading a team as the business scales.

Requirements

  • CPA required.
  • Public accounting foundation (Big 4 or national firm, audit practice).
  • Operating-company experience owning a close process.
  • Experience taking a company through a first or early-stage audit, ideally in lending, fintech, or a subscription business.
  • Demonstrated fluency using AI as core infrastructure for work (drafting policy memos, building reconciliations, automating close checklists).
  • Hands-on technical accounting depth in revenue recognition (ASC 606) and ideally receivables or financial instruments (ASC 310/326).
  • Experience operating under lender reporting obligations (covenant packages, compliance certificates, monthly deliverables with contractual deadlines).
  • Comfort building accounting systems from imperfect data and sequencing pragmatically.
  • A builder's temperament: high standards, low ego, and good judgment.
  • Must live near an airport or have the flexibility to travel quarterly.

Nice To Haves

  • Startup experience at a Series A-C company where the finance function didn't exist before you.
  • A track record of early and repeated promotion, or controller-level scope before holding the title.
  • Experience as the final escalation point on accounting questions.
  • Experience building policies, close processes, or systems that outlived your tenure.

Responsibilities

  • Own the general ledger, chart of accounts, and monthly close process, including the transition from a fractional provider to in-house processes.
  • Develop and document a GAAP revenue recognition policy for the membership-plan model, covering various revenue streams and contract assets.
  • Manage the company's first financial statement audit, including firm engagement, fieldwork, PBC list ownership, and serving as the primary contact for auditors.
  • Prepare monthly unaudited and annual audited financial statements for lender reporting, supporting covenant compliance and borrowing-base reporting.
  • Coordinate tax cleanup of historical positions and ongoing compliance with external advisors.
  • Design controls for cash operations, including member payments, clinic payouts, and lender collections, in partnership with engineering.
  • Build and lead an internal accounting team as volume and complexity grow, starting as an AI-empowered individual contributor.

Benefits

  • Day 1 medical/dental/vision benefits
  • Flexible time off
  • 11 Snout calendar holidays
  • Paid parental leave
