About The Position

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Controller to join our team. This full-time position is responsible for managing all financial aspects of the organization, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close, P&Ls, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow modeling. The Controller will also oversee billing, collections, inventory control, accounts payable, payroll, and sales tax filings. This role requires a strong understanding of accounting principles, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to communicate financial information effectively to various stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently, possess strong attention to detail, and be adept at process improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, including 2+ as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accountant
  • Proven ownership of a full month-end close and financial statement preparation
  • Strong command of payroll, AP/AR, inventory accounting, and cost control
  • Hands-on experience running physical inventory audits and managing stock room controls in a food and beverage or retail environment
  • Advanced Excel or Google Sheets — pivot tables, lookups, and models built from scratch
  • Experience with accounting software (QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Jonas, Northstar, Clubessential, or similar) and POS reporting

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or CMA
  • Private club, country club, hotel, or multi-outlet restaurant experience
  • Familiarity with club management and dues billing platforms
  • Working knowledge of the Uniform System of Financial Reporting for Clubs
  • Experience implementing or migrating a financial system
  • Comfortable leaving your desk to count a walk-in or ask an operator a direct question
  • Can explain a P&L to someone who has never read one
  • Handle member and staff financial information with total discretion
  • Build process where none exists — and document it

Responsibilities

  • Own the general ledger, month-end and year-end close, and department-level P&Ls across dining, bar, poolside, events, tennis, aquatics, and membership
  • Build the annual budget, a rolling 12-month forecast, and a 13-week cash flow model
  • Manage dues billing, member statements, house accounts, F&B credit tracking, and collections
  • Build pro formas for private events and programs — venue fee, per-person food and bar, staffing, and true contribution margin — then report actuals against them
  • Control food and beverage costs: plate costing, pour cost, par levels, and variance investigation
  • Run scheduled inventory audits across kitchen, bar, poolside cafe, and pro shop — full physical counts, cycle counts, and unannounced spot checks — reconciled against purchases and POS depletion
  • Own stock room management: receiving and put-away, labeling and shelf organization, FIFO rotation, storage security and key/access control, and expiration and waste tracking
  • Investigate and report on shrink, theft, and count discrepancies, and enforce corrective controls with department heads
  • Run the full AP cycle — POs, three-way match, coding, vendor management, and 1099s
  • Track all incoming payments, event deposits, daily deposits, and merchant settlements; reconcile Stripe activity to POS and sales
  • Process payroll for salaried, hourly, seasonal, and tipped staff, including tip pooling in compliance with NJ wage law
  • Monitor labor cost as a percentage of revenue and build staffing models tied to forecasted volume
  • Maintain sales tax filings, insurance and liquor license records, and internal controls with proper segregation of duties
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with department heads and team leaders — kitchen, bar, aquatics, tennis, events, and front of house — to set, communicate, and execute cost and revenue goals for each department
  • Train team leaders on budget ownership, cost controls, inventory procedures, and revenue targets, and run regular check-ins on performance against objectives
  • Deliver a monthly financial package to ownership with variance commentary in plain language
