Controller

Starface World
$190,000 - $230,000Remote

About The Position

Starface is seeking a Controller to lead and strengthen its accounting function as the company enters its next stage of growth. This role reports directly to the SVP, Head of Finance, oversees the accounting team, and owns the accounting function across close, reporting, audits, controls, systems, external partnerships, and team development. The Controller will be responsible for bringing critical workstreams current, creating more reliable and scalable processes, and building a clear roadmap for the accounting organization needed as Starface continues to grow. The ideal candidate is an experienced, hands-on accounting leader who has successfully stepped into complex or evolving environments, created order from ambiguity, and led teams through periods of growth or transformation. They should be technically strong, comfortable rolling up their sleeves, and confident partnering with executives, auditors, advisors, and investors. Starface values fun, care, aiming high, curiosity, and forward momentum, welcoming an attitude of exploration into the bold and creative.

Requirements

  • Significant progressive accounting experience, ideally including experience as a Controller or Head of Accounting.
  • Experience leading or materially improving an accounting function within a growing, changing, or operationally complex organization.
  • Experience in consumer products, retail, beauty, apparel, food and beverage, or another inventory-based business.
  • Experience supporting a financing, investment, acquisition, sale process, or other major transaction, and understanding the level of rigor, responsiveness, and documentation required.
  • Strong knowledge of inventory accounting, revenue recognition, accruals, financial reporting, internal controls, and U.S. GAAP.
  • Meaningful experience with NetSuite and understanding how accounting systems, operational systems, and business processes intersect.
  • Experience successfully leading external audits and ability to communicate with auditors and advisors confidently and constructively.
  • Experience working through accounting backlogs and inherited challenges that come along with a high growth, fast paced business.
  • Ability to distinguish between controls that are essential and processes that can remain appropriately lightweight.
  • Ability to operate strategically while staying close enough to the work to identify issues, support your team, and move priorities forward.
  • Comfortable taking ownership quickly, making informed decisions with incomplete information, and improving existing systems rather than waiting for ideal conditions.
  • Strong people leadership skills to assess talent, develop team members, and thoughtfully build an accounting organization for the future.
  • Proactive communication skills to keep senior leadership informed of progress, risks, tradeoffs, and recommended next steps.
  • Collaborative, low-ego, and able to build trust across Finance, Operations, Systems, and the broader organization.
  • Located in the Eastern or Central time zone, or ability to maintain substantial working-hour overlap with teams and partners across the U.S. and U.K.

  • Bring outstanding audits, covenant reporting, reconciliations, tax-related workstreams, and other critical external deliverables fully current.
  • Establish a reliable and well-controlled close process, with clear timelines, ownership, documentation, and reporting standards.
  • Lead relationships with external auditors, accountants, tax advisors, and other partners, serving as Starface’s primary accounting subject-matter expert and point of accountability.
  • Build and begin executing a practical roadmap for improving accounting processes, controls, systems, documentation, and team structure.
  • Own accounting systems and tools, including NetSuite, and partner with Operations and Systems to ensure cross-functional decisions support accurate and efficient financial processes.
  • Evaluate the accounting team’s structure, capabilities, and capacity, develop existing talent, and recommend future hiring priorities.
  • Manage and coach the accounting team, establishing clear expectations, strong operating rhythms, and opportunities for growth.
  • Partner closely with the SVP of Finance on priorities, risks, decisions, and communication with executive leadership and the Board.
  • Strengthen Starface’s readiness for future financing, investment, diligence, or M&A activity by ensuring our accounting records, controls, reporting, and documentation can withstand increased scrutiny.
