Controller

Counsel HealthBoston, MA

About The Position

About the role Counsel Health is seeking a meticulous and strategic Controller to serve as the backbone of our financial operations. We need a finance leader who can balance rigorous accounting standards with the agility required in a fast-paced, venture-backed environment. You will own the entirety of Counsel’s financial ecosystem. This includes building out our internal accounting infrastructure, managing the month-end close, and ensuring our financial reporting provides the clarity needed to scale our impact on patient care. You aren't just "keeping the books"; you are designing the financial engine that allows our team to thrive. What You’ll Do Financial Architecture: Design, implement, and manage all accounting policies and internal controls to ensure GAAP compliance and data integrity. The Monthly Rhythm: Lead the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes, delivering timely and accurate financial statements to the executive team. Operational Finance: Manage all day-to-day finance functions, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, tax compliance, and treasury management. Audit & Compliance: Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and tax professionals, ensuring seamless annual audits and regulatory filings. Strategic Partnership: Collaborate with the CEO and operations leads to translate financial data into actionable insights, helping to refine our unit economics as we scale. Systems Optimization: Select and implement scalable financial software and ERP tools to automate manual workflows and reduce "time to close."

Requirements

  • Experience: 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 4 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role—ideally within a high-growth startup or the healthcare sector.
  • Technical Mastery: Deep expertise in US GAAP and a proven track record of managing complex financial operations.
  • The Startup Mindset: You are comfortable with ambiguity and "rolling up your sleeves" to build processes from scratch rather than just following an existing manual.
  • Attention to Detail: An uncompromising eye for accuracy; you believe that the "small things" in a ledger represent the health of the entire mission.
  • Communication: The ability to explain complex financial concepts to non-finance stakeholders, including our clinical and engineering teams.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA Certification: Active CPA license is strongly preferred.
  • Healthcare Experience: Familiarity with value-based care models, medical billing nuances, or healthcare-specific regulatory environments.
  • Tool Kit: Experience with modern "fin-tech" stacks (e.g., NetSuite, Rippling, Brex, or Bill.com ).
  • Big 4 Background: Early career experience at a top-tier accounting firm.
