About The Position

The Controller, Development leads project accounting and financial reporting across Peterson’s development portfolio. As part of the Accounting team, this role works closely with Finance, Construction, Development, and Sales & Marketing departments to support project budgets, cash flow, forecasting, cost tracking, and variance analysis. The Controller, Development is responsible for maintaining accurate project financials and translating project information into clear, well-supported insights that support thoughtful decision-making.

Requirements

  • Professional accounting designation required: CPA, CA, CGA, or CMA.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, with Commerce or Business preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant accounting and finance experience, preferably with real estate development accounting experience.
  • Strong experience with project reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow analysis, cost tracking, and variance analysis.
  • Strong technical accounting judgement, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and tact when handling sensitive and confidential information.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Yardi, particularly Yardi Voyageur, is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development accounting and financial reporting across a portfolio of real estate development projects.
  • Oversee project budgets, forecasts, cash flow reporting, cost tracking, and variance analysis.
  • Maintain accurate project financials, including supporting schedules, reconciliations, and well-supported working papers.
  • Partner closely with Construction, Development, and Finance departments to review project performance, identify risks or variances, and support informed decision-making.
  • Review project costs, commitments, draws, funding requirements, and related reporting to ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project expectations.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting deliverables related to development projects.
  • Apply strong technical accounting judgement and knowledge of Canadian GAAP to review transactions, resolve accounting issues, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes for development projects.
  • Contribute to process improvements, reporting enhancements, and strong financial controls within development accounting.
  • Support special projects, strategic initiatives, and ad hoc requests as required.
