About The Position

The Consumer Underwriter is responsible for analyzing and evaluating consumer loan applications to determine if an extension of credit should be made. Loan applications will be decisioned based on applicant’s credit qualifications and ability to repay and collateral (if applicable). The underwriter will use their individual credit skill sets and risk assessment skills within credit union underwriting guidelines, lending policies, procedures, and designated underwriting authority to either grant approval, counter-approve, or decline loan applications. The Consumer Underwriter must be able to explain clearly with written and verbal communication loan decisions on applications to lending staff. Responsible for resolving any credit disputes that are received on existing loans through direct and indirect channels.

Requirements

  • Three years to five years of similar or related experience, including preparatory experience.
  • A high school degree or equivalent
  • Understanding and evaluating personal credit reports.
  • Familiar with different types of collateral.
  • Calculating financial ratios for underwriting analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience in using Velocity and Fiserv DNA/Core System.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal formats.
  • Is able to bend, sit, and stand in order to perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs.
  • Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in an emergency situation.
  • Must be able to operate routine office equipment including computer terminals and keyboards, telephones, copiers, facsimiles, and calculators.
  • Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary.
  • Must be able to work extended hours or travel off site whenever required or requested by management.
  • Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
  • Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team.
  • Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions.
  • Must be able to complete basic mathematical calculations, spell accurately, and understand computer basics.
  • Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence.
  • Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public.

In-depth dialogue, conversations and explanations with customers, direct and indirect reports and outside vendors can be of a sensitive and/or highly confidential nature. Communications may involve motivating, influencing, educating and/or advising others on matters of significance. Typically includes subject matter experts as well as first level to middle managers.

Responsibilities

  • Independently review and decide on loan applications within established underwriting guidelines and underwriting authority. Evaluation of factors including debt-to-income ratio, analyzing credit reports and historical/current trends, calculation of income, and loan-to-value in making loan decisions. Consider ever-changing current economic and market conditions in decision-making process and applicable program/product specifications with analysis of Credit, Capacity, Capital, Character, and Collateral.
  • Works with lending and front line to communicate reasons for declines, offer alternative dollar amount approvals and/or loan structures as appropriate. Sets required conditions around income verification and verification of employment in decisioning loans to meet members needs without compromising risk and exceptions to credit policy.
  • Validate all data from applications contained in Loan Director. Must also be proficient in reviewing income documentation to ensure verification and catch fraudulent documents. Serve as the primary line of defense to stop fraudulent applications. Effectively communicate decision criteria in Loan Director notes. Resolve credit disputes daily though E-Oscar direct and indirect from members.
  • Provide guidance to Consumer and Closing Specialists in developing solutions and structuring on challenging loans. Communicate loan decisions to lending staff in a timely manner.
  • Other duties and special assignments designated by CLO.
