Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent required
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in accounting, lending, or related positions.

Nice To Haves

  • A B.A. degree in related field of study preferred
  • Specialized bank consumer lending education/training preferred
  • Formal credit training program or certification preferred
  • Knowledge and experience working with a Retail Loan Origination System (LOS).
  • Proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills.
  • Proficient interpersonal relations and communicative skills.
  • Knowledge of current loan servicing procedures, lending laws, and regulations.
  • Sound judgment and risk assessment.
  • Moderate computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Performs administrative and underwriting duties to support the consumer lending function of which the following are illustrative:
  • Evaluates consumer loan requests (Auto Loans, Credit Cards, Home Equity, Personal Loans, and Recreational Vehicles)
  • Checks for completeness and accuracy
  • Verifies personal, employment, and financial information with confirmation through use of pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements and compare income against loan requirements and internal guidelines
  • Ensures required documentation has been provided
  • Completes credit risk assessment
  • Evaluates credit reports and identify any risk indicators
  • Assesses debt-to-income (DTI) ratios and repayment capacity
  • Reviews collateral valuations and general loan quality.
  • Applies lending policies and guidelines
  • Ensures loan decisions align with risk tolerance thresholds, product guidelines, and follow regulatory compliance
  • Approves or denies consumer loans based on consumer loan standards.
  • Uses automated underwriting systems
  • Works within LOS to review system-generated offers and override if needed.
  • Inputs data and ensures accuracy for automated models
  • Recommends process improvements, system enhancements, automation, and workflow changes to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Participates in testing and validation of system upgrades or new features
  • Communicates with stakeholders
  • Collaborates with loan officers, processors, and customer service to provide guidance, resolve issues, and support positive client experiences.
  • Provides exceptional customer service and support cross-functional projects as needed.
  • Suggests strategic and innovative strategies to achieve goals from the annual operating plan.
  • Fraud detection and due diligence
  • Identifies inconsistencies or suspicious activity
  • Flags potential fraud cases (fake income, identity issues)
  • Escalates high-risk applications
  • Portfolio and performance monitoring
  • Prepares and analyzes reports on portfolio performance, delinquency trends, and loan quality to identify areas of improvement.
  • Provides input on credit policy development and training initiatives to ensure consistent application of standards across consumer lending.
  • Documentation and audit readiness
  • Maintains clear, compliant records of decisions
  • Ensures files meet audit and regulatory standards
  • Documents rationale for approval/denial decisions
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as directed by the Director of Consumer Lending
  • Abides by the current laws and organizational policies and procedures designed and implemented to promote an environment which is free of sexual harassment and other forms of illegal discriminatory behavior in the workplace.
  • Cooperates with, participates in, and supports the adherence to all internal policies, procedures, and practices in support of risk management and overall safety and soundness and the bank's compliance with all regulatory requirements, e.g. Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), Equal Credit Opportunity Act, etc.; ensures that the department and all personnel adhere to the same.
  • Responds to inquiries relating to his/her particular area, or to requests from customers, other personnel, etc., within give time frames and within established policy.
  • Performs tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or re-designed depending upon individual or departmental circumstances.
  • Serve as backup to the Credit Department for tasks such as credit file maintenance, loan reviews, small business underwriting, risk rating updates, monitoring/tracking, and preparation of management reports.
