About The Position

The Pathology Department is seeking a Consult Coordinator to perform duties related to and including accessioning second opinion and confirming consult cases. This role involves correctly identifying, obtaining, and entering patient demographics, clinical impression, and insurance billing information. The position requires interaction with a variety of personnel including consult coordinators, pathologists, pathology assistants/residents, laboratory technicians, medical transcriptionists, administrative assistants, medical records/surgical pathology archivists, couriers, clinicians, and patients. The successful candidate will carry out responsibilities in a timely fashion, providing a high level of customer service and performing tasks accurately, while understanding and adhering to departmental policies, work rules, and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in a medical office environment or equivalent experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of a Medical Terminology Training course.
  • Extensive knowledge of insurance and billing practices, anatomy, diagnoses, and operational procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers, data entry, fax machine, photo-copy machine and other general office equipment.
  • Analytical ability to work with numbers and accuracy.
  • Familiar with web-based applications and can easily develop skills on new systems.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and set up consult cases, ensuring slides/blocks and paperwork match.
  • Check for and obtain billing information.
  • Accurately accession second opinion and confirm cases, and enter billing information.
  • Print slide labels and perform bar code labeling of paperwork.
  • Enter information for on-line ordering of special/immunohistochemical stains.
  • Monitor and file tissue blocks and unstained slides.
  • Provide backup for answering the telephone, offering superior customer service, and following up on requests, questions, or concerns while adhering to policies, work rules, and Johns Hopkins standards for service excellence.
  • Mail reports, enter data in Pathology Data Systems, and use the Federal Express Shipping system.
  • Package slides for return to the institution.
  • Amend reports as needed.
  • Utilize established procedures to recognize discrepancies in patient medical records and report corrective action to the Quality Assurance Coordinator.
  • Transport slides/materials within the East Baltimore campus.
