About The Position

The Construction Training Coordinator prepares program participants for entry-level and apprentice-level careers in the construction industry through classroom instruction, hands-on training, and experiential learning. The position delivers construction and safety training, supports industry-recognized credentials, and applies learning through residential and other approved construction projects. Working with program and construction staff, the Coordinator monitors participant skill development, reinforces workplace expectations and safe work practices, and supports participants in developing the technical and professional skills needed for continued training, certification, and employment.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Construction Management, Building Construction, Carpentry, Skilled Trades, or a related field.
  • OSHA 500 and NCCER Instructor Certification, or ability to obtain required certifications within the first year of employment.
  • Three years of hands-on residential construction, remodeling, or closely related construction experience.
  • Experience teaching, training, coaching, or providing hands-on instruction to youth or young adults, including individuals who may face barriers to education, training, credential attainment, or employment.
  • Experience applying construction safety requirements, maintaining project or training documentation, and working within established program or project procedures.
  • Knowledge of residential construction methods, materials, sequencing, tools, equipment, and common building practices.
  • Knowledge of construction and jobsite safety, PPE requirements, OSHA standards, and safe tool and equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of NCCER curriculum, construction training, credential preparation, blueprint reading, construction math, carpentry, framing, and finish work.
  • Understanding of green and sustainable building practices.
  • Knowledge of instructional planning, hands-on training, skill assessment, and participant progress monitoring.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, shared drives, databases, and participant or project-tracking systems.
  • Strong construction, carpentry, tool-use, and hands-on technical skills.
  • Strong instructional, coaching, demonstration, and facilitation skills in classroom and active jobsite environments.
  • Strong jobsite organization, project coordination, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to assess participant skill development and adapt instruction to individual learning needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Building Construction, Career and Technical Education, Education, or a related field.
  • Current OSHA 500 and NCCER Instructor Certification.
  • Five years or approximately 10,000 hours of hands-on residential construction experience, including framing and finish carpentry.
  • Experience managing residential construction projects, including general contracting, project coordination, or construction project management.
  • Experience working in YouthBuild, AmeriCorps, workforce development, career and technical education, nonprofit, or other grant-funded programming.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver hands-on instruction in residential construction processes, techniques, materials, tools, and related construction skills.
  • In coordination with the Risk & Safety Coordinator, teach and reinforce safe work practices, including PPE, tool safety, jobsite safety, and applicable OSHA requirements.
  • Coordinate vocational training and credential preparation, including NCCER Core Curriculum, OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR, and other assigned construction or workforce credentials.
  • Lead experiential learning activities and construction projects that reinforce classroom instruction, NCCER competencies, and practical job skills.
  • Provide instruction in the proper selection, use, care, maintenance, and storage of construction tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Integrate blueprint reading, construction math, project sequencing, workplace communication, problem-solving, and other job-readiness skills into construction training.
  • Assess participant skill development and provide individualized instruction, coaching, remediation, or additional practice as needed.
  • Maintain instructional and training records required to document participant progress and credential attainment.
  • Lead assigned construction activities and projects under the direction of program and construction leadership.
  • Organize daily jobsite activities and participant work assignments consistent with approved project scopes, schedules, safety requirements, and training objectives.
  • Provide active jobsite instruction and oversight while monitoring work quality, participant performance, and safe work practices.
  • Coordinate tools, equipment, building materials, and supplies needed for assigned projects.
  • Purchase approved materials, tools, equipment, or supplies within established purchasing procedures and authorization levels.
  • Maintain required project, purchasing, and jobsite documentation.
  • Report safety concerns, equipment issues, project delays, material needs, or other matters requiring leadership attention.
  • Maintain a structured, professional, and safety-focused training environment that supports participant learning and workforce preparation.
  • Reinforce program and workplace expectations, including attendance, professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and appropriate conduct.
  • Serve as a professional instructor, coach, and mentor while maintaining appropriate instructional and professional boundaries.
  • Monitor participant engagement and identify barriers that may affect successful participation, skill development, or completion.
  • Coordinate with Participant Services, Career Pathways, program leadership, and other appropriate staff when participants require support beyond the instructional role.
  • Participate in participant planning, support coordination, restorative-practice, transition, and other multidisciplinary meetings as requested.
  • Support participant re-engagement and additional skill development when needed.
  • Safely transport participants to approved construction sites, training locations, service projects, and other program activities using authorized AYW vehicles.
  • Complete required vehicle, mileage, transportation, and trip documentation in accordance with organizational procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and timely timesheets, expense documentation, purchasing records, participant training records, credential documentation, and other assigned administrative records.
  • Provide documentation and information needed for grant reporting, performance reporting, monitoring, audits, and internal program review.
  • Collaborate with program leadership, Education and Training, Participant Services, Career Pathways, recruitment and enrollment staff, and other internal teams to support participant engagement, completion, and transition.
  • Coordinate with community, school, construction, workforce, and project partners to support training and participant opportunities.
  • Represent American YouthWorks professionally when interacting with project partners, vendors, community members, and other external stakeholders.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, professional development, National Service Days, participant activities, and other program or organizational events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of construction training, participant success, program operations, and organizational priorities.
