About The Position

S&ME is seeking a full-time Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Professional to join our Construction Services team in New Albany, Indiana. This role is crucial for ensuring the integrity and safety of construction projects by evaluating and confirming the quality of materials used. Working under the supervision of a Licensed Engineer, you will coordinate field explorations, log soil samples, perform engineering calculations and design, prepare proposals and reports, and provide project and client support. The position involves testing construction materials like soil, concrete, and asphalt to ensure they meet specifications, analyzing construction plans, recording field activities using systems like Metafield®, preparing reports and proposals, and communicating with management, contractors, and clients. The role requires flexibility with work hours, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and overtime, based on project needs and weather conditions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Management, or a similar technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in construction materials testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt.
  • Understanding that within 6 months of hiring, at least 1 certification associated with the type of duties and responsibilities assigned must be obtained.
  • Active Construction Materials industry certifications, such as: American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician, International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils), and/or KYTC certifications.
  • Basic math and communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language.
  • Willingness and ability to perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as working outdoors in varying weather conditions, walking over rough terrain, standing for up to 12 hours a day, routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, and maneuvering field equipment safely on uneven ground.
  • Understanding that a fluctuating weekly schedule and occasional travel are possible.
  • Must comply with Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.
  • Must have valid employment eligibility (I-9).

Responsibilities

  • Perform tests and oversee special inspections of materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and others to ensure they meet project specifications and industry standards.
  • Analyze construction plans and specifications to verify alignment with project goals before conducting field observations.
  • Record and manage field activities, documenting detailed observations and test results during project execution, using Metafield® or other management systems daily for efficient data handling and coordination.
  • Assist in drafting reports and proposals for smaller projects, ensuring thorough and accurate assessments and documentation.
  • Interact with management, contractors, and clients daily to maintain project transparency and provide regular updates on progress.
