About The Position

S&ME is seeking an individual to join our Construction Services team in either our Nashville, Tennessee, or Huntsville, Alabama, as a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Laboratory Supervisor. This role involves managing lab personnel, overseeing daily activities and projects, and ensuring quality and safety in lab operations. The position includes scheduling assignments, maintaining equipment, coordinating training and certifications, and supporting business development. It balances team leadership, client relations, quality assurance, and operational efficiency. The role will also contribute to the construction services and geotechnical team through field and project management roles, initially supporting both Huntsville and Nashville laboratory operations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of combined experience in geotechnical and construction materials testing.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a supervisory, management, or leadership role.
  • Proficient in computer technology.
  • Proficient in mechanical testing equipment.
  • Willing and able to perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Willing and able to work most of the time in the office, but might be requested to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Willing and able to walk on a concrete/tile floor and stand for potentially up to 12 hours a day.
  • Willing and able to lift and carry 40-50 lbs. of field/laboratory samples and equipment.
  • Willing and able to safely handle field tools and maneuver equipment on active construction sites.
  • Must comply with our Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.
  • Must have valid employment eligibility (I-9).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering or other closely related technical fields.
  • Active industry-related certifications, such as: American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Aggregate Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
  • Active industry-related certifications, such as: International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
  • Active industry-related certifications, such as: National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET): CMT-Soils; CMT-Concrete; CMT-Asphalt

Responsibilities

  • Oversee lab staff in testing, equipment maintenance, calibrations, and daily operations.
  • Handle Construction Materials Testing projects, including proposal development, budgeting, scheduling, and report delivery.
  • Manage staff schedules and collaborate with Field Supervisors and Project Managers on project progress.
  • Train employees on lab processes and ensure they maintain necessary certifications.
