About The Position

S&ME is seeking motivated, full-time Construction Materials Engineering Technicians at all experience levels to join our Construction Services group in Columbus, Ohio. In this role, you will be crucial in ensuring construction projects, ranging from local eateries to major sports venues, are built with quality and safety as top priorities. We offer hands-on training, mentorship, and advancement opportunities, with seasoned professionals able to take on leadership roles.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree in a related field preferred for advanced levels.
  • 0-2 years relevant experience for Associate Technician/Technician I.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with associate degree for Technician II.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with associate degree for Technician III.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience for Technician IV.
  • Industry certifications such as: American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician and/or International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils).
  • Strong English communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Basic math proficiency, including understanding of measurements and units of weight.
  • Understanding of a fluctuating schedule and interest in occasional travel.
  • Willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions.
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially long periods.
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment).
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary.
  • Candidates must comply with our Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.
  • Only candidates with valid employment eligibility (I-9) will be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior leadership or mentoring experience is a plus for Technician IV.

Responsibilities

  • Performing field and laboratory testing on construction materials like concrete, asphalt, soil, and aggregates.
  • Collecting and preparing samples for analysis.
  • Interpreting test results and preparing detailed reports.
  • Working closely with engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure all work meets specifications and safety guidelines.
  • Shifting work hours based on project demands and weather, including early mornings, some Saturdays, and overtime (paid at time and a half).
  • Occasional travel to support other offices, with per diem and lodging covered.
