About The Position

S&ME is seeking a hard-working, flexible individual for their Ashville, North Carolina Construction Services team as an Entry-Level Construction Materials Engineering Technician. This role involves frequent travel and hands-on work, primarily outdoors, to ensure construction quality and safety. The technician will gain practical experience in concrete, soils, asphalt, and masonry testing, perform field and lab tests, maintain equipment, conduct inspections according to IBC codes, and document findings using Metafield®. The role requires adaptability to shifting work hours, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, possible holidays, and overtime.

  • Basic math skills with an understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure
  • Understanding of a fluctuating weekly schedule and frequent travel
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ability to work outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to walk over rough, uneven terrain and stand for potentially up to 12 hours a day
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Ability to maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites
  • Valid employment eligibility (I-9)

Responsibilities

  • Perform concrete sampling and testing.

  • Receive paid, on-the-job training and support for ACI and ICC certifications.
  • Work outdoors year-round in varying conditions at new sites.

  • Document findings.
  • Manage data using Metafield®.
