About The Position

S&ME is seeking an experienced and dedicated full-time Construction Materials Engineering Technician to join their Construction Services team in Greensboro, North Carolina. This role involves conducting field testing and observations of construction materials like soil, concrete, and asphalt at various project sites. The technician will be responsible for understanding project requirements, accurately recording observations and test results, managing data using field and laboratory information systems, ensuring equipment accuracy, following International Building Code (IBC) standards, and communicating with management, contractors, and clients. The position requires flexibility in work hours, including early mornings, some Saturdays, and overtime, based on project needs and weather conditions.

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in construction testing/inspecting soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
  • At least two (2) or more active certifications from the following: American Concrete Institute (ACI) - Field Testing Grade I, Strength Testing Technician, Laboratory Technician; International Code Council (ICC) - Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
  • Good math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure
  • Understanding of a fluctuating schedule and an interest in occasional travel
  • Valid United States driver's license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) for driving in the US, with an acceptable driving record
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to operate a company-assigned vehicle safely (Truck or SUV)
  • Ability to walk over rough, uneven terrain and stand for potentially up to 12 hours a day
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Willingness to work outside of normal business hours and travel as project needs arise
  • Must comply with Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements
  • Must have valid employment eligibility (I-9)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field testing and observations of construction materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and other pertinent materials.
  • Understand project requirements before fieldwork.
  • Accurately record observations and test results.
  • Manage data using field and laboratory information systems (Metafield®).
  • Ensure field and lab tools are accurate and meet industry standards.
  • Follow International Building Code (IBC) standards for testing and inspecting construction materials.
  • Interact with management, contractors, and clients to report project progress and resolve any issues.
  • Potentially mentor junior technicians.
