Construction Lead

TAR•Austin, TX

About The Position

As Construction Lead, you own how TAR builds in the field: what it costs, in what order it happens, and how fast it can go. Your initial focus is sharpening construction cost estimates for PV+BESS and reworking construction sequencing to reduce the schedule. TAR uses an owner-led, EPCM-as-agent delivery model, so you work directly with engineering, procurement, and field crews rather than reviewing a contractor’s plan from a distance. As the company scales toward 5GW, you will build out TAR’s broader construction organization. The role is based in Austin with regular time at the project site in West Texas. TAR is a hardware and software company building physical infrastructure and working directly with a large compute provider to scale and deploy 5GW by 2028. Its mission is to build an off-grid power plant for data centers powered by renewable technologies and deliver fast, clean, scalable power.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to estimate construction costs for utility-scale PV+BESS projects, from conceptual budgets through detailed bottoms-up estimates.
  • Deep understanding of construction sequencing on utility-scale sites, including critical paths, crew productivity, and trade-offs among speed, cost, and risk.
  • Project management and/or construction management experience at a constructor or EPC.
  • At least 7 years of experience in construction of utility-scale energy projects.
  • Proficiency in Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project.
  • Comfort building estimates and models from scratch.
  • Sound judgment and a bias toward action, with comfort making high-consequence decisions under uncertainty and compressed schedules.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience on multi-hundred-megawatt projects.
  • Experience delivering medium- to large-scale microgrids or multi-generation-source projects.
  • Experience building and leading a construction team or estimating function.
  • Owner-side experience at a developer or IPP.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain bottoms-up construction cost estimates for utility-scale PV+BESS projects, covering labor, equipment, materials, productivity rates, and indirect costs.
  • Own construction sequencing from mobilization through mechanical completion, identifying schedule improvements through parallel workfaces, crew loading, laydown and logistics, and delivery timing.
  • Pressure-test EPC and subcontractor bids, schedules, and change orders against internal estimates and sequencing, and challenge unsupported figures.
  • Provide construction input to engineering and procurement early so racking, BESS, and power electronics decisions account for installability and speed.
  • Track installed costs and field production rates, compare results with estimates, and apply lessons to subsequent projects.
  • Build TAR’s construction organization by defining roles, hiring the team, and establishing standards for estimating, planning, and field execution.

Benefits

  • Up to $15,000 relocation bonus.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • $1,000 monthly stipend for meals.
