Construction Lead

TAR•Austin, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

As Construction Lead, you own how TAR builds in the field: what it costs, in what order it happens, and how quickly it can be completed. The initial focus is sharpening construction cost estimates for utility-scale PV+BESS projects and reworking construction sequencing to reduce the schedule. TAR uses an owner-led, EPCM-as-agent delivery model, so the role works directly with engineering, procurement, and field crews. As the company scales toward 5GW, the Construction Lead will build out TAR’s broader construction organization. The role is based in Austin, with regular time at the project site in West Texas. TAR is a hardware and software company building physical infrastructure, including an off-grid power plant for data centers powered by renewable technologies. The company is working directly with a large compute provider to scale and deploy 5GWs by 2028.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to estimate construction costs for utility-scale PV+BESS projects, from early conceptual budgets through detailed bottoms-up estimates.
  • Deep understanding of construction sequencing on utility-scale sites, including critical paths, crew productivity, and trade-offs among speed, cost, and risk.
  • Project management and/or construction management experience at a constructor or EPC.
  • At least 7 years of experience in construction of utility-scale energy projects.
  • Proficiency in Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project.
  • Ability to build estimates and models from scratch.
  • Sound judgment and a bias toward action, with comfort making high-consequence decisions with incomplete information on a compressed schedule.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience on multi-hundred-megawatt projects.
  • Experience delivering medium-large-scale microgrids or multi-generation-source projects.
  • Experience building and leading a construction team or estimating function.
  • Owner-side experience at a developer or IPP.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain bottoms-up construction cost estimates for utility-scale PV+BESS projects, including labor, equipment, materials, productivity rates, and indirect costs, updating estimates as designs and markets change.
  • Own construction sequencing from mobilization through mechanical completion, identifying ways to compress the schedule through parallel workfaces, crew loading, laydown and logistics, and delivery timing.
  • Pressure-test EPC and subcontractor bids, schedules, and change orders against internal estimates and sequencing, and challenge unsupported figures.
  • Provide construction input to design and procurement early so racking, BESS, and power electronics decisions account for installability and speed.
  • Track installed cost and production rates in the field, compare actuals to estimates, and apply lessons to subsequent projects.
  • Build TAR’s construction organization by defining roles, hiring the team, and setting standards for estimating, planning, and field execution.

Benefits

  • Up to $15K relocation bonus
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Health, Dental, Vision insurance
  • $1K monthly stipend for meals
