About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Construction Controller to take ownership of the accounting and financial operations for a stable, well-established general contractor with approximately $40M in annual revenue. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who knows construction accounting inside and out but wants more than simply maintaining the books. Leadership is looking for a strategic partner who can evaluate existing processes, identify opportunities for improvement, and bring thoughtful recommendations to the table. The right person will be trustworthy, gritty, high integrity, and comfortable operating with significant autonomy. You’ll have the opportunity to put your stamp on the accounting function while joining a stable, family-oriented organization with a long-tenured team and ambitious plans for future growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Strong construction accounting experience with a deep understanding of job costing and WIP.
  • Experience with revenue recognition, cost-to-complete forecasting, project financial management, budgeting, and cash-flow management.
  • Ability to independently own the accounting function within a project-based organization.
  • Strong Excel skills.
  • Comfortable working across Accounting, Operations, Project Management, and executive leadership.
  • High level of trustworthiness, integrity, accountability, and discretion.
  • Gritty, hands-on mentality — someone willing to roll up their sleeves and own what needs to get done.
  • Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to drive accountability without taking an overly corporate approach.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Foundation Software or another construction ERP is a plus.
  • Strategic mindset with the confidence to identify opportunities and bring well-thought-out proposals to leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process, including financial statements and management reporting.
  • Own construction accounting, job costing, WIP reporting, revenue recognition, over/under billings, projected costs, and anticipated margins.
  • Partner directly with Project Managers and Operations on cost-to-complete projections, job forecasts, budget-to-actual performance, and project profitability.
  • Monitor backlog, projected revenue, gross profit, project cash flow, and overall financial performance.
  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and internal controls.
  • Lead annual budgeting and ongoing forecasting while developing meaningful KPIs and reporting for leadership.
  • Oversee AP, AR, billing, collections, retainage, banking, bonding, insurance, and audit-related requests.
  • Provide financial insight around equipment, staffing, investments, and other strategic business decisions.
  • Manage and support one direct report responsible for AP and payroll.
  • Evaluate current accounting processes and strategically propose improvements that create greater efficiency, accountability, and visibility across the organization.
  • Partner closely with executive leadership and Operations as the financial voice of the business.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary targeted at $115,000–$135,000
  • Bonus structure being developed.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) with employer match.
  • Three weeks of PTO with a flexible approach to additional time off.
  • Eight paid holidays.
  • Long-term growth potential as the company expands and continues building its finance and accounting leadership structure.
