About The Position

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is an international nonprofit conservation organization operating the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The Construction and Maintenance Worker – HVAC / Refrigeration supports the organization’s mission by applying trade expertise and strong internal customer service to maintain assigned facilities. This role maintains, repairs, and optimizes heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems across facilities, helping ensure reliable temperature-sensitive environments for wildlife and guests. The position reports to a C&M Lead, Supervisor, or Manager. The position is based in San Diego, California, and is an hourly, full-time, non-exempt union position. The hourly rate is $42.55. Selected candidates will be responsible for union fees and dues. Occasional after-hours support is required for urgent needs.

Requirements

At least four years of journey-level HVAC/Refrigeration experience.
Completion of a certified apprenticeship program.
High school diploma.
Valid California driver’s license upon hire.
EPA 608 Universal Certification within 60 days.
Journey-level knowledge of HVAC controls, refrigerant handling, and energy-efficient practices.
Ability to safely and properly handle tools in compliance with California OSHA regulations and workplace health and safety requirements.
Commitment to coaching others and ability to thrive in a diverse environment.
Understanding of building codes and quality standards related to HVAC and refrigeration.
Ability to understand, interpret, and work from blueprints and drawings.

Responsibilities

Maintain and repair HVAC and refrigeration systems, including air handlers, chillers, split systems, and refrigerators.
Use a CMMS or equivalent system and monitor the radio throughout the shift to respond to, record, and complete preventative and reactive maintenance work orders.
Perform inspections, diagnostics, and system testing.
Follow standard operating procedures and partner with leadership on updates that improve safety, consistency, and efficiency.
Collaborate with other trades and oversee external vendors on shared projects and urgent work, ensuring quality and site alignment.
Coordinate with internal teams to minimize disruption and provide high-quality internal customer service.
Mentor and support team members by sharing HVAC expertise and helping them navigate internal systems, culture, and professional approach.
Provide occasional after-hours support for urgent needs.
