About The Position

The Domestic Violence Officer (DVO) works in partnership with the General Investigations Section (GIS). GIS constables are members of a specialized uniform team that conducts risk-based and evidence-focused investigations. DVO’s conduct follow-up investigation of domestic violence incidents and respond to assist front line officers when appropriate. DVO’s specialize in safety planning and risk assessment; they lead and plan interviews with victims, witnesses and accused persons and collect evidence to support investigations. DVO’s work collaboratively with other DVO’s, the Domestic Violence Coordinator, the RDVU, Crown Counsel, MCFD, Corrections and Victim Services to manage safety.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience leading evidence based IPV investigations
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, detect, and manage risk related to dynamic situations involving relationship violence
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting and accurately documenting Safety Planning in relation to IPV investigations
  • Must have the ability to identify, gather, and recall relevant facts and details about an incident, situation, or problem and formulate solutions
  • Must work well unsupervised and be able to lead team investigations
  • Demonstrated experience working closely with external stakeholders including Crown Counsel, Community Corrections, Victim Services, and MCFD
  • Demonstrated ability to complete complex and well written reports
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, detect, and manage risk related to dynamic situations involving relationship violence

Responsibilities

  • Primarily a uniform position, but may include some plain clothes work
  • Working 11.43 shifts, following a 4-5-5 schedule of days and afternoons
  • Lead and manage intimate partner violence and family violence investigations
  • Manage victims, witnesses and accused and connect with supports & services
  • Communicate with victims and provide offender status updates
  • Monitor Offenders. Coordinate and conduct checks to ensure compliance with release conditions and judicial orders
  • Work in partnership with other DVO’s and collaborate with other VicPD teams to manage IPV files
  • Assist GIS centered investigations as directed and fill in for the Coordinator position when required
  • Effectively communicate with individuals and groups, work collaboratively with partner agencies and possess strong de-escalation skills
  • Conduct reviews of domestic violence investigations as required
