About The Position

This is a constable position within the VIIMCU comprised of Victoria Police, Saanich Police and RCMP members. Investigators are responsible for investigating the following incidents that occur within the jurisdiction of the Victoria Police Department, Saanich Police Department, Oak Bay Police Department, Island District RCMP and the Central Saanich Police Service: Homicides, Missing persons where foul play is suspected, and Unsolved homicides as resources and priorities permit. This position may require the member to travel away from home for extended periods and with little advance notice. All members are expected to carry a department issued cell phone and respond to calls while on call and off duty.

Requirements

  • Constable rank
  • Demonstrated experience with complex investigations including serious criminal offences, investigations involving multiple suspects and/or victims, suspect and/or victim interviews, and major crime scene management, and involvement of other investigative units or agencies
  • General investigation and/or major crime investigation training (JIBC or CPC)
  • A performance record that is deemed satisfactory and suitable for assignment to an integrated, high performing investigative unit as assessed by the candidates supervisor, the selection panel, and Human Resources
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a small team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with little supervision
  • Excellent report writing and comprehensive note taking skills
  • Ability to commit to four years in the position, with an optional fifth year
  • Flexibility for short notice callouts as required
  • Demonstrated experience writing judicial authorization requests – Search warrants, production orders, etc
  • Understanding of witness management

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience with Major Crime Investigations
  • Possesses a basic understanding of the Major Case Management Model and principles
  • Demonstrated success in interviewing and interrogation
  • Demonstrated ability to present evidence in court and to withstand the scrutiny of intensive cross-examination
  • An interest and desire to advance to and assume roles of File Coordinator, Primary Investigator and Team Commander
