About The Position

The Conservation Technician is part of the Conservation and Preservation Department and reports to the Conservator. This role has the primary responsibility of performing book repair, binding, housing construction, and conservation treatments on circulating library material. This position will work closely with all staff in the Conservation Lab at the Smathers Libraries. This is an off-campus job requiring students to have their own transportation to the facility. Our address is 4040 NE 49th Avenue Gainesville, FL 32609. The first semester will focus mostly on making pamphlets for items needing hard covers. Work beyond one semester will increase skills in other repair and boxing techniques.

Requirements

  • Manual dexterity.
  • Ability to accurately and safely measure, cut and glue paper and cloth binding materials.
  • Ability to perform simple bindings and mends, using needle and thread, scissors, knives, and other hand tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must have their own, reliable transportation to the facility as this position is off campus.

Nice To Haves

  • Hand skills from a transferable art and/or craft.
  • Previous experience working in a library and/or museum.
