About The Position

Reporting to the Curator of Collections/ Collections Manager, the Conservation Tech combines expertise in museum collection care to protect and present the Museum’s permanent collection with a focus on 3D artworks, including the outdoor sculpture collection. This role is responsible for tasks like cataloging, handling, and preparing objects for display and storage, and executing maintenance and storage solutions using archival materials and preventative conservation methods. The Conservation Tech ensures protection of artwork from environmental damage while also enhancing its accessibility and visual impact for exhibition and semi-permanent installation/display.

Requirements

  • Basic understanding of preventative conservation and Museum best practice standards to protect and maintain artwork for the long term.
  • Knowledge of appropriate archival materials for art maintenance, handling, and storage.
  • Experience with the proper and safe handling of delicate and valuable objects.
  • Excellent organizational and documentation skills to maintain accurate collection and outdoor sculpture records.
  • Meticulousness in executing collection-based projects and documentation to ensure a final product that is aligned with Museum and industry standards.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Work independently but also collaboratively with colleagues across departments.
  • Effectively communicates collection needs and priorities.
  • Communicates effectively with a wide range of stakeholders (both internal and external).
  • Works closely with researchers, students, volunteers, and other guests involved in collections-related activities, including the instruction of how to properly handle artwork and objects, document procedures, and follow safety protocols.
  • Understands basic legal and ethical considerations related to collections management, including copyright laws and cultural heritage regulations, as well as adherence to the Museum’s written policies and professional standards.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb ladders.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in variable conditions within reason and with a priority on safety.
  • Minimum two years college preferred.
  • Previous knowledge of/experience with conservation standards and art handling.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, with additional proficiency in Adobe suite.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of/familiarity with museum practices preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Routinely cleans and maintains objects and display cases for works on view, according to Museum standards.
  • Designs, creates, and coordinates custom, museum-quality special housings for a variety of art forms, including small and large-scale 3D collection objects.
  • Supports the overall safety and preservation of the collection, working closely with the Curator of Collections/Collections Manager and Registrar for Collections.
  • Works with archival, acid-free materials and conservation techniques to prevent damage from light, pollution, and the object materials themselves. Performs minor treatments and repair and, if necessary, with the consultation from the Curator of Collections, the Registrar for Collections, and external Conservators.
  • Maintains detailed records of all treatment work, storage locations, and the materials used for each object. Monitors environmental conditions for indoor and outdoor works. Keeps logs for HVAC, humidity, and pest control data in coordination with the Head of Operations to identify damage or potential problems that could possibly impact the collection.
  • Collaborates with the Lead Preparator, preparator team, contracted art handlers, and other appropriate museum staff to ensure the proper installation of multifaceted 3D collection objects. Applies their expertise to advise on and facilitate the installation of outdoor sculpture.
  • Performs other duties as required.
