About The Position

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is seeking a full-time Computer Associate (Operations) in the Bureau of Enterprise Technology. This position is open only to City of New York employees serving in the permanent civil service title of COMPUTER ASSOCIATE (OPERATIONS). The FDNY is the largest Fire Department in the United States and is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency, dedicated to providing fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services. Requirements

  • A certificate from an accredited technical school (approximately 675 hours) with a specialization in computer operations, and two years of satisfactory full-time computer operations experience, in a large-scale networked, multi-tiered, or mainframe computer environment, or two years of satisfactory data communications network experience working in a mainframe or multi-tiered computer environment
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and three years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in '1' above
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in '1' above
  • A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to '1', '2',or '3' above
  • At least two years of full-time experience in computer operations in a large-scale networked, multi-tiered, or mainframe computer environment, or two years of satisfactory data communications network experience working in a mainframe or multi-tiered computer environment.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with FDNY personnel at all levels and collaborate with technical teams across BTDS.
  • Initiate and perform scheduled operational tasks to maintain continuous service of FireCAD, EMSCAD, and other mission-critical systems.
  • Monitor all primary and backup hardware, software, peripherals, and applications; promptly identify and resolve issues.
  • Escalate unresolved technical issues following established escalation procedures.
  • Maintain detailed logs and documentation of all support activities, incidents, and resolutions.
  • Develop and manage operational templates and logs for data tracking and process improvement.
  • Act as the point of contact for incoming IT-related calls, including user requests, issue reports, and system updates.
  • Provide hands-on support for desktop applications, local/networked printers, and end-user hardware.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve LAN/WAN issues, including hardware and software problems.
  • Diagnose and repair network communication issues involving routers, hubs, switches, and modems.
  • Perform routine system maintenance and adhere to IT operations best practices.
  • Support systems that require 24/7 uptime, working 12.5-hour shifts (including day, night, weekends, and holidays).
