Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer

Brunswick Boat Group•Fond du Lac, WI
•$73,600 - $117,900

About The Position

The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer is part of an analysis engineering team supporting the design and development of conventional marine internal combustion engines, drive systems, electrified propulsion, and vessels. The role conducts detailed simulations using commercial CFD software to model fluid behavior and heat transfer, including multiphase hydrodynamic analysis of propellers, drives, and boats. The engineer works with design, development, and test engineers to inform product design, evaluate trade-offs, define validation testing, and coordinate work across onsite and offshore teams. The role also documents and presents analysis results, recommends actionable improvements, and identifies opportunities to develop and improve analysis methods, tools, and processes. The position requires both independent problem-solving and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience performing CFD analysis using Siemens Simcenter STAR-CCM+, Ansys Fluent, or similar commercial software.
  • Strong fundamental understanding of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer.
  • Exposure to numerical methods and engineering analysis.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) analysis.
  • Experience with multiphase and phase change analysis.
  • Experience with Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI).
  • Experience with dynamic, moving, and overset mesh.
  • Experience with Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH).
  • CAD experience with Creo and Ansys SpaceClaim.
  • Experience using a High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster with Linux OS.
  • Knowledge of test instrumentation, including strain gauges, accelerometers, thermocouples, pressure transducers, and flow meters.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed CFD simulations using commercial software to model fluid behavior and heat transfer.
  • Perform multiphase hydrodynamic analyses of propellers, drives, and boats, including simulations of gas-liquid, liquid-liquid, gas-solid, liquid-solid, and gas-liquid-solid interactions.
  • Work with design and development engineers to provide design inputs, conduct trade-off studies, assess impacts on performance, weight, and cost, and recommend solutions.
  • Collaborate with test engineers to specify validation testing and instrumentation, including developing test plans, selecting sensors, and supporting accurate data collection.
  • Work independently to develop innovative solutions and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to achieve project goals.
  • Coordinate work packages between onsite and offshore teams, manage timelines, communicate clearly, and maintain quality and consistency of deliverables.
  • Document analysis findings and communicate results to stakeholders, engineering partners, and leaders through reports, meetings, and recommendations.
  • Identify opportunities for new method development and work with experts to test and deploy methods.
  • Seek improvements to analysis processes, tools, and methodologies.
