About The Position

The Compounding Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparing both sterile and non-sterile compounded medications according to USP guidelines. This role involves meticulous attention to detail, adherence to strict quality control and safety protocols, and effective collaboration with pharmacists. The technician will operate pharmacy software, maintain patient profiles, manage inventory, and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.

Requirements

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Proficient in both non-sterile and sterile compounding.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to USP <795> (non-sterile), USP <797> (sterile), and USP <800> guidelines.
  • Understanding and adherence to state, federal, and industry regulations, including HIPAA.
  • Skilled in managing inventory for compounded medications and materials.
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with pharmacists, technicians, and patients.
  • Attention to detail for accuracy in compounded medications, prescription processing, and patient information management.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Frequent standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Frequent use of hands for compounding, labeling, and operating equipment.
  • Clear vision for reading labels and verifying medications.
  • Frequent repetitive tasks like mixing, weighing, and measuring.
  • Ability to bend and stoop to access shelves and equipment.
  • Adherence to safety protocols for handling hazardous materials and maintaining sterile environments.
  • Required use of all necessary PPE (gloves, lab coats, gowns, protective eyewear).

  • Prior experience in compounding or laboratory work is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare a variety of non-sterile compounded medications (e.g., capsules, oral liquids, topical medications, nasal preparations, suppositories, troches, and tablets) following USP <795> & <800> guidelines.
  • Prepare sterile compounded medications (e.g., IV admixtures, injectables, eye drops) in compliance with USP <797> & <800> guidelines, ensuring aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Ensure all compounded medications meet pharmaceutical standards for accuracy, potency, and elegance.
  • Verify accuracy of compounding formulas, following prescribed instructions for consistency.
  • Maintain a clean and organized compounding area for safe, accurate, and efficient work.
  • Operate pharmacy software to gather patient and prescription information and process prescriptions accurately.
  • Update and maintain accurate patient profiles with current medication and personal information.
  • Adhere to all relevant regulatory, accreditation, and internal guidelines, including state and federal laws, HIPAA, USP <795>, USP <797>, USP <800>, ACHC/PCAB, and Nationwide Compounding SOPs.
  • Ensure all compounded medications are prepared following quality control and safety procedures.
  • Follow safety protocols for handling hazardous materials (USP <800>) and maintaining sterile compounding environments (USP <797> & <800>).
  • Monitor and manage inventory for compounded medications and materials, including bulk ingredients, packaging supplies, and finished medications.
  • Ensure timely ordering and proper storage of all materials, maintaining up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Certificates of Analysis.
  • Assist in managing controlled substances and maintaining accurate inventory records.
  • Follow established sanitation protocols for deactivating, decontaminating, cleaning, and disinfecting the compounding area.
  • Perform routine cleaning of equipment and workspace according to daily, weekly, and monthly procedures.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Work closely with pharmacists to ensure compounded medications are prepared according to prescribed formulas and meet patient needs.
  • Assist pharmacists in reviewing medication regimens and making adjustments as necessary.
  • Assist in the prescription call-back process, confirming patient details and resolving discrepancies.
  • Provide administrative support, including assisting in prescription fulfillment and other operational tasks.
  • Fulfill additional requests from management as needed.
