About The Position

This role involves preparing both sterile and non-sterile compounded medications following strict USP guidelines. The technician will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, potency, and quality of all compounded medications, maintaining a clean and organized work environment, and adhering to all relevant regulatory and safety protocols. The position also includes patient information and prescription processing, inventory management, and collaboration with pharmacists.

Requirements

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Proficient in both non-sterile and sterile compounding.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to USP <795> (non-sterile), USP <797> (sterile), and USP <800> guidelines.
  • Understanding and adherence to state, federal, and industry regulations, including HIPAA.
  • Skilled in managing inventory for both compounded medications and materials.
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with pharmacists, other technicians, and patients.
  • Attention to detail for ensuring accuracy of compounded medications, prescription processing, and patient information management.
  • Ability to maintain sterile environments where necessary.
  • Ability to track and manage controlled substances appropriately.
  • Ability to work closely with pharmacists to ensure compounded medications are prepared according to prescribed formulas and meet patient needs.
  • Ability to assist pharmacists in reviewing medication regimens, discussing potential issues with formulas, and making adjustments as necessary.
  • Ability to assist in the prescription call-back process, confirming patient details and resolving prescription discrepancies.
  • Ability to provide administrative support, including assisting in prescription fulfillment and other operational tasks related to medication preparation.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare a variety of non-sterile compounded medications such as capsules, oral liquids, topical medications, nasal preparations, suppositories, troches, and tablets, following USP <795> & <800> guidelines.
  • Prepare sterile compounded medications, including IV admixtures, injectables, and eye drops, in compliance with USP <797> & <800> guidelines, ensuring aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Ensure all compounded medications meet pharmaceutical standards for accuracy, potency, and elegance.
  • Verify accuracy of compounding formulas, following prescribed instructions to ensure consistency in each batch.
  • Maintain a clean and organized compounding area to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient work.
  • Operate pharmacy software to gather patient and prescription information, ensuring prescriptions are processed accurately in compliance with company policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Update and maintain patient profiles accurately, ensuring medication and personal information is current.
  • Adhere to all relevant regulatory, accreditation, and internal guidelines, including state and federal laws, HIPAA confidentiality standards, and specific compounding regulations (USP <795>, USP <797>, & USP <800>), along with ACHC/PCAB and Nationwide Compounding SOPs.
  • Ensure all compounded medications (both sterile and non-sterile) are prepared following quality control and safety procedures.
  • Follow safety protocols for handling hazardous materials (USP <800>) and maintaining sterile compounding environments (USP <797> & <800>).
  • Adhere to state, federal, and regulatory guidelines for compounding and dispensing medications.
  • Ensure that all compounded medications are labeled correctly and meet quality standards for potency and pharmaceutical elegance.
  • Perform regular quality control checks to verify that each batch meets prescribed formulas and desired outcomes.
  • Monitor and manage inventory for compounded medications and materials, including bulk ingredients, packaging supplies, and finished medications.
  • Ensure timely ordering and proper storage of all materials, maintaining up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Certificates of Analysis for all chemicals.
  • Assist in managing controlled substances and maintaining accurate inventory records in compliance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Follow established sanitation protocols of deactivate, decontaminate, clean and disinfect for the compounding area to prevent contamination and maintain a clean environment.
  • Perform routine cleaning of equipment and workspace, adhering to daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning procedures.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials in accordance with safety regulations.
  • Work closely with pharmacists to ensure compounded medications are prepared according to prescribed formulas and meet patient needs.
  • Assist pharmacists in reviewing medication regimens, discussing potential issues with formulas, and making adjustments as necessary.
  • Assist in the prescription call-back process, confirming patient details and resolving prescription discrepancies.
