About The Position

The Composition Score-Prep Mentor will provide peer support to composition students as they prepare scores for their composition portfolio, performances, and readings. The composition department is seeking a composition student who has completed Scoring for Full Orchestra (CM-441) and has a strong understanding of orchestral notation, score preparation, and music-notation practices. The student mentor will be available for designated evening hours for drop-in consultations, helping other composition students troubleshoot notation questions and improve the presentation of their scores.

Requirements

  • Current student at Berklee College of Music or Boston Conservatory at Berklee.
  • Enrolled at least half-time in a degree, diploma, or certificate-seeking undergraduate or graduate program. Summer is the only semester in which a student can maintain employment without being enrolled. In this case, the student must be pre-registered for the upcoming fall semester. This exception does not apply to fall or spring semesters.
  • Have a valid United States Social Security Number (SSN).
  • Remain in “valid” Visa status as applicable.
  • A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students in their first semester can work, even though they do not have an official GPA until the completion of their first semester.
  • Federal Work Study student may apply.
  • In good disciplinary standing.
  • Must be located in the U.S.
  • Successful completion of Scoring for Full Orchestra (CM-441).
  • Familiarity with professional music-notation software (Dorico, Finale, Sibelius, Musescore)
  • Ability to read and work confidently with musical scores.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to provide constructive, supportive feedback to fellow students.

Responsibilities

  • Be available for drop-in mentoring sessions one evening a week, from 6:00–8:00 PM on either Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday
  • Assist composition students with score preparation and notation.
  • Answer questions about orchestral and chamber-music notation.
  • Help students identify and correct notation errors or inconsistencies.
  • Help students prepare clear and readable scores suitable for portfolio submission, rehearsals, performances, and readings.
  • Refer students to appropriate faculty or resources
