About The Position

The Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) is seeking internal applicants for a Compliance Industrial Safety & Health Investigator 4 (CISHI 4) position in its Appeals Unit. This role involves administering the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) and offers an opportunity to grow careers, expand skills, and contribute to workplace safety and health. The position serves as a regulatory expert in complex cases, utilizing knowledge of occupational safety and health law, case analysis, and negotiation to resolve appealed citations fairly and consistently. The role involves direct interaction with employers, employees, attorneys, and internal teams to find solutions. Strong communication, impartial judgment, and organizational abilities are essential for guiding decisions that impact workplace safety across Washington State. Flexible scheduling (4/10s, 9/80s, 5/8s, etc.) is encouraged after training and management approval. Teleworking is permitted full-time with a requirement to report to the office once per week. Travel to other locations throughout the state may be required. The assigned duty station can be any of our service locations within Washington State.

Requirements

  • Must be a current L&I employee
  • Six years’ experience as a DOSH Compliance Industrial Safety & Health Investigator or equivalent experience as a Federal OSHA or other state plan journey-level occupational safety and health specialist or industrial hygienist.
  • The ability to take action to learn and grow.
  • The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Occupational Safety & Health, or related field may substitute for 2 years of required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead informal conferences for appealed safety and health cases, ensuring fairness, clarity, and professionalism.
  • Review and analyze case files, inspection reports, and evidence to prepare Corrective Notices of Redetermination.
  • Negotiate settlements, educate employers on compliance, and document all actions clearly and thoroughly.
  • Collaborate with internal staff and external stakeholders to ensure consistency statewide.
  • Manage multiple cases under strict timelines while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
