Complex Claims Professional, Financial Institutions/D&O
About The Position
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is seeking a Complex Claims Professional for its New York City, Atlanta, or Chicago offices. The role independently handles a diverse pending of high-severity claims underwritten by the Financial Institutions and Commercial (Public Company) teams, focusing mainly on Financial Institutions, Errors & Omissions, Directors & Officers, and Fiduciary claims. Most files are excess claims, though the successful candidate may be considered for high-visibility primary claim opportunities in the future based on business needs, performance, and demonstrated capabilities. The position involves frequent interaction with internal customers, including senior management, underwriters, and actuaries, and external customers, including brokers, insureds, and defense counsel. Travel to conferences, mediations, and client meetings may be required.
Requirements
- Typically 3–8+ years of relevant claims or legal experience.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and negotiation skills.
- Ability to thrive in a highly collaborative team environment.

- JD strongly preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
Responsibilities
- Independently evaluate coverage, liability, and damages information to determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company.
- Attend mediations for complex claims on behalf of the company and effectively negotiate settlements.
- Provide outstanding customer service and work seamlessly with insureds, brokers, and underwriters in handling and adjudicating claims.
- Analyze and draft coverage letters as appropriate and communicate coverage positions effectively verbally and in writing.
- Draft reports, set reserves within authority, or make recommendations concerning reserve changes.
- Travel to conferences, mediations, and client meetings as necessary.
