Completions Engineer

Fervo Energy•Houston, TX
•Hybrid

About The Position

The Completions Engineer is responsible for the technical design, planning, and execution of Fervo’s geothermal well completions and workover activities, from initial stimulation through ongoing intervention and optimization. The role translates subsurface objectives into safe, repeatable, and cost-effective field operations and supports scaling Fervo’s development model from pilot projects to commercial deployment. Working closely with subsurface, drilling, production, and facilities teams, the engineer provides hands-on technical leadership during planning and execution. The position involves frequent field engagement and work in high-ambiguity, execution-heavy environments, with an emphasis on learning-driven iteration and operational excellence. The role is eligible for some hybrid flexibility, but requires regular in-office presence at one of Fervo Energy’s offices in Houston, Golden, Reno, Oakland, or Salt Lake City. Employees are expected to work in the office three days per week, and the schedule is considered an essential function of the role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in unconventional completions, well interventions, or workover operations.
  • Experience with multiple well completion or intervention technologies.
  • Strong understanding of tools and methods used to evaluate completion efficiency and optimize well performance.
  • Proficiency with stimulation and completion modeling software such as ResFrac, Kinetix, or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience applying risk assessment processes, hazard analysis, and Management of Change (MOC).
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, execution-heavy environments with shifting priorities.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25–30% to field locations.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on field experience across drilling, completions, and/or workover operations.
  • Experience with casing and tubing stress analysis, including thermal and mechanical loads during stimulation and injection/production.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting early-career engineers.
  • Experience working on first-of-a-kind, non-standard, or technically complex well designs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical design, planning, and execution of geothermal well completions, stimulations, and workover/intervention operations.
  • Develop detailed operational procedures to safely achieve well objectives and comply with regulatory and internal HSE requirements.
  • Provide hands-on field engineering support during active operations and serve as the primary point of contact for completion and intervention-related issues.
  • Support the full well lifecycle, including initial completions, stimulation, recompletions, remedial work, and well interventions.
  • Partner with subsurface and reservoir engineering teams to optimize completion architecture, stimulation designs, and operational parameters.
  • Use ResFrac or other industry-leading simulators to evaluate fracture behavior, completion efficiency, and well performance.
  • Support cross-functional well planning and field development optimization with drilling, production, and facilities teams.
  • Translate subsurface objectives into executable field designs that balance performance, risk, and cost.
  • Develop completion and workover cost estimates, from early scoping estimates to detailed AFE-level and probabilistic estimates.
  • Support well planning and operational scheduling in coordination with cross-functional teams.
  • Compile technical and operational data for permitting, regulatory filings, and internal approvals.
  • Support preparation of technical documentation for internal and external reviews.
  • Apply risk assessment, hazard analysis, and Management of Change (MOC) processes to planned and active operations.
  • Lead post-job reviews and after-action analyses to capture lessons learned and identify best practices.
  • Incorporate operational learnings into future designs, procedures, and standards to drive continuous improvement.
  • Travel frequently to field locations to oversee operations and collaborate with field personnel; approximately 25–30% travel is expected.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision plan options.
  • Employer-paid basic life insurance and short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • 401(k) plan with up to 6% match.
  • Flexible paid time off and paid parental leave.
  • Family-building, fertility, hormonal health, pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting support through Carrot.
  • Dependent care FSA for eligible child and elder care expenses.
  • Annual Lifestyle Spending Account for eligible wellness expenses, including fitness, financial planning, pet insurance, and pet care.
  • Employee ownership opportunities through the Employee Stock Purchase Program, stock option grants, and bonus opportunities for eligible roles.
