About The Position

The Competency Trainer supports the delivery of competency restoration services for inmates with mental illness who have been deemed incompetent to stand trial. This role facilitates structured group sessions focused on legal education, court processes, and the development of skills necessary to assist in one’s legal defense. This position is a shared role and may also support general administrative functions at the site. The Competency Trainer works under the direction of clinical leadership and collaborates closely with mental health, custody, and legal teams to support treatment goals and program compliance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience in the specific functional area.
  • Demonstrated success in applying function-specific skills is required.
  • Active CPR/BLS certificate required (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved), if role is located in a correctional facility.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in psychology, criminal justice, social services, or related field preferred.
  • Additional certifications or specialized training may be required depending on the function.
  • Experience in healthcare, correctional healthcare, or a regulated industry is preferred.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry-specific regulations, compliance standards, and best practices may be required, particularly for roles in highly regulated functions like HR and Finance.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate competency restoration groups for inmates, focusing on legal education, court procedures, and ability to assist in their defense.
  • Deliver structured curriculum in a clear, consistent, and engaging manner appropriate to the correctional setting.
  • Adapt instructional methods and materials to meet varying cognitive abilities, mental health needs, and learning styles.
  • Assess and document inmate participation, comprehension, and progress toward competency.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical and behavioral records in accordance with policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate observations and progress updates to the clinical team to support treatment planning.
  • Collaborate with mental health staff, custody personnel, and legal stakeholders to support program effectiveness and continuity of care.
  • Participate in team meetings and case discussions as appropriate.
  • Ensure adherence to facility procedures, safety protocols, and program requirements.
  • Provide general administrative support as needed, which may include scheduling, data entry, file management, and coordination of program materials.
  • Assist with tracking program participation, reporting, and other operational needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
