About The Position

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features. Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale. The Role As a Compartment Manufacturing Engineer (CME), you represent Manufacturing within the Vehicle Systems Product Interface team for a given global architecture or vehicle style. You are the primary Manufacturing voice to Product Engineering and program teams, ensuring designs meet Manufacturing Requirements and can be executed safely, efficiently, and within standard General Assembly (GA) processes at all plants. This role blends virtual assessments, manufacturability and ergonomic analysis, and cross‑functional issue resolution to deliver robust, repeatable, high‑quality assembly. As part of GM Manufacturing Engineering, your work directly supports GM’s bold vision for the future: zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or related field).
  • 3+ years combined experience in Product Engineering and/or Manufacturing Engineering, including program launch and/or pre‑production build support.
  • Ability to interpret and apply Manufacturing Requirements across multiple vehicle systems in alignment with standard General Assembly processes.
  • Clear, concise communication skills with the ability to explain complex issues and trade‑offs to cross‑functional stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in ME Execution, tooling development, or General Assembly plant operations (process engineering, launch support, or issue resolution).
  • Familiarity with GM systems and processes such as MPS, VAA, ECR/EDGE, Auros, FIT, Momentum (GVDP), PRTS, LMS, and Teamcenter / VS workflows.
  • Experience working with Exterior Trim, Interior Trim, Chassis, Powertrain, or electrical harness/components, including debug and end‑of‑line verification.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and plant teams while managing multiple program deliverables.
  • Training or certification in structured problem solving (Red X, DFSS, OpEx) and/or Industrial Engineering experience in methods, line balance, and standards work.
  • Experience performing manufacturability and assembly feasibility assessments using 3D math and engineering drawings.
  • Experience conducting ergonomic and hand/tool clearance evaluations in virtual or physical environments.
  • Experience with virtual build tools such as Teamcenter Visualization, VR assessments, or comparable digital manufacturing studies.
  • Working knowledge of PFMEA development, process/tooling documentation, and review forums such as CRV and ePeer.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze product designs with Product Engineering to ensure manufacturability, ergonomic feasibility, and compliance with Manufacturing Requirements.
  • Represent Manufacturing in architecture/style and compartment forums, serving as the single global ME voice for your assigned systems.
  • Communicate design changes, requirements, risks, and manufacturability concerns to Product Interface Leads and Program Execution Manufacturing Engineers.
  • Enforce General Assembly strategies and validate program compliance; develop and process justified deviations when requirements cannot be met as designed.
  • Identify manufacturing issues early, document them in the appropriate systems, and lead cross‑functional resolution with Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and program stakeholders.
  • Conduct virtual assessments including VR reviews, static/dynamic studies, process virtual builds, and ergonomic checks using tools such as Teamcenter VIS Mockup and related VS workflows.
  • Facilitate and/or support Level 2 PFMEA workshops for your compartments and translate key risks into clear, actionable mitigation plans.
  • Participate in ePeer reviews and Component Readiness Reviews (CRV) to ensure Manufacturing Requirements, risk mitigation, and launch readiness are fully addressed.
  • Document process and tooling requirements for regional execution and drive alignment and common solutions across all executing assembly plants.
  • Drive Base Engineered Content (BEC) reduction by challenging part proliferation, fastener variety, and unnecessary content, supporting workshops focused on labor and complexity minimization.
  • Support IVER/PTB and Assembly Plant builds as needed and serve as IRT co‑chair or key contributor to achieve timely global issue closure.
