About The Position

Under general supervision, assists with the processing and supervision of prisoners and detainees; performs a variety of generalized public safety work in providing alternative police responses to non-emergency calls for service, answering general telephone inquiries, and other tasks to support Police operations.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED and a minimum of one (1) year of related work experience or college coursework in criminal justice, evidence collection, photography or related fields or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid State of Arizona Driver's license and clear criminal record.
  • Successful completion of a background and polygraph is required.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures as well as the principles of record keeping, public information, confidentiality, and records management.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city and the location of important buildings.
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice and court systems, procedures and protocols in Arizona.
  • Knowledge of basic criminal, traffic and juvenile law, disposition policies and court procedures.
  • Knowledge of community policing principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of proper search and transportation procedures and safe restraint protocols.
  • Skill in safely controlling and assisting detainees and prisoners.
  • Skill in recognizing scope of authority, and responding to emergencies and stressful situations calmly, quickly, and decisively.
  • Skill in interviewing and dealing impartially with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Skill in preserving and presenting evidence in traffic and criminal cases.
  • Skill in collecting, preserving and securing physical evidence.
  • Skill in using and maintaining special law enforcement equipment.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and a variety of office software.
  • Skill in safely handling hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Skill in performing first aid and CPR.
  • Skill in interacting with people from differing backgrounds.
  • Skill in effectively communicating, both orally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual (Spanish) speaking skills are desirable.
  • Specific technical training such as attending a state certified correctional or detention officer academy may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists patrol officers with transporting and processing suspects, victims and prisoners; observes and assesses the behavior of detainees and reports all problems.
  • Participates in booking, searching and identifying new prisoners; verifies information on booking forms; obtains signatures, photographs and fingerprints; processes property for safekeeping; inputs information on standard forms and data into computer system.
  • Maintains the safety and security of the detainees and facility; controls prisoner behavior and promotes acceptable conduct; determines if prisoners are ill or injured and obtains medical assistance when needed.
  • Provides transport for prisoners and other individuals as directed; inspects and cleans vehicles as required.
  • Serves subpoenas, summons and other legal papers; Checks local and state warrants and collects and distributes related paperwork.
  • Prepares a variety of reports and records; takes reports from walk-in customers; prepares correspondence through data entry and shares information with other jurisdictions as needed.
  • Provides court and criminal investigation testimony as necessary; coordinates vehicle impound hearings and vehicle releases.
  • Responds to non-emergency calls for service to include citizen inquiries at reception desk, via telephone or in the field.
  • Investigates minor crimes and accidents, secures and processes crime and accident scenes; performs investigative and technical duties in support of detectives.
  • Collects, preserves, logs and secures evidence; documents all handling of evidence and property; maintains activity logs and prepares a variety of reports and records as needed.
  • Performs traffic control duties and provides motorist assistance.
  • Receives and issues receipts for bond monies as needed.
  • Participates in community-based policing outreach efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
