Community Service Officer
About The Position
The purpose of this position is to assist in the protection of campus property, preservation of the educational environment, maintain parking regulations, assist in the investigation of incidents, complaints, and crimes, and assist in enforcing campus rules and regulations. This role also involves maintaining the communications and related technical support of the uniformed police staff, and assisting members of the university community who may come to the Public Safety Department seeking aid. Positions in this classification are unique to the campus and operate on a 24-hour schedule, requiring officers to be able to work any shift. The role demands considerable discretion, high moral standards, and the ability to maintain composure under stressful situations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to obtain certification in First Responder and CPR.
- Must be able to successfully pass the Department’s Field Training Program for Community Service Officers.
- Ability to climb stairs, walk, or stand for extended periods.
- Ability to safely operate a vehicle under all types of conditions.
- Ability to identify and accurately relay a person’s specific physical characteristics, read letters and numbers clearly from a distance.
- Strong customer service, time management, and communication skills.
- Must be able to work any one of the scheduled shifts (24/7 operation).
- Must be able to work overtime as situations arise.
Nice To Haves
- Experience in corrections, security, or law enforcement preferred.
- Must have the ability to climb stairs, to check all floors of assigned building areas.
- Must possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Must be able to successfully pass and maintain First Responder Medical Certification.
- Must be able to run in certain situations.
- Must be able to possess and demonstrate self-defense skills when called upon.
- Ability to work outside in all types of weather.
Responsibilities
- Perform periodic patrols of assigned buildings and grounds of the University.
- Check exterior doors, windows, etc., to determine they are secure.
- Request identification of persons in buildings after hours.
- Drive a patrol vehicle and operate a two-way radio and other electronic equipment while patrolling grounds.
- Perform duties within the Dispatch Center, including answering the phone and dispatching officers simultaneously.
- Operate CCTV cameras, computerized access security systems, and emergency phone monitor systems.
- Provide courtesy escorts and transport students between various locations on campus.
- Assist with the response to all alarms, fire and security, contacting necessary personnel.
- Understand the rules and regulations of the University.
- Assist Public Safety sworn staff with investigating complaints and other situations.
- Administer CPR, basic first aid, and medical treatment.
- Act as an ambassador for the university and the Department of Public Safety when working with groups.
- May be assigned to a specific specialty such as Emergency Medical Technician, Student Cadet Liaison, or Bike Officer.
