About The Position

This is a part-time, non-exempt position with a starting wage of $18.29/hr. The role involves less than 20 hours per week, with hours varying based on needs. The position is open until filled. The Community Service Officer performs vehicle patrol to detect correctable community issues, responds to public requests for assistance within their training and authority, and resolves or requests resources for non-emergency law enforcement incidents. They determine if violations have occurred, issue warning notices and citations for minor violations, and prepare activity reports. The role also involves developing positive public relationships, directing traffic, assisting with crowd control, aiding stranded motorists, facilitating information exchange at minor traffic crashes, making public appearances, and attending required training. The officer must maintain a professional attitude and appearance, understand the Sheriff’s Office mission and vision, and assist with the Law Enforcement Explorer Post and Sheriff Citizen Academy. Other related duties as assigned are also part of the role, with regular attendance and punctuality required.

Requirements

  • Ability to effectively communicate and report in written format and pursuant related training by Sheriff’s Office personnel.
  • Ability to function effectively and prioritize functions under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to verbally communicate clearly and courteously and with adequate grasp of rules, ordinances and laws enforced by sworn staff.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps or other geographic representations and travel to given locations.
  • Ability to work safely in and around vehicular traffic on busy highways.
  • Ability to analyze simple problems and develop appropriate solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform vehicle patrol within the jurisdiction of the Sheriff’s Office for the detection of correctable community issues/challenges.
  • Respond to all requests for assistance from public as necessary and within scope of training, ability, and authority.
  • Respond to and resolve, or request appropriate resources to resolve, non-emergency law enforcement incidents.
  • Determine if violations of law or ordinance have occurred and report and assist as directed by supervisor(s).
  • Conduct interviews with citizens regarding requests for law enforcement service.
  • Issue warning notices and citations for minor violations and within authority as a non-sworn officer.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate, timely reports of all activities and as directed by supervisor.
  • Develops positive relationships with members of the public through courteous, productive, professional personal interaction.
  • Direct traffic and assist with crowd control at traffic accidents, fire incidents, special events and all other similar.
  • Assist stranded motorists as directed and assigned.
  • Facilitate and assist sworn staff at motor vehicle crashes; facilitate exchange of driver information at minor traffic crashes.
  • Makes public appearances/give tours and presents relevant and assigned information regarding Sheriff’s Office and its programs.
  • Attends training as required.
  • Maintains a professional attitude and appearance.
  • Understands and follows the mission and vision statement of the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Works with deputies to facilitate the Dodge County Law Enforcement Explorer Post and Sheriff Citizen Academy.
  • Performs other related duties, while adhering to work rules governing non-sworn staff, as assigned by Sheriff or designee.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality required.
