About The Position

The Village of Tinley Park is seeking qualified applicants to fill two (2) part-time Community Service Officer (CSO) – Field Operations positions. These are non-sworn positions responsible for providing general support to the Tinley Park Police Department and service to Village residents through community policing. The CSO-Field Operations positions will be responsible for community policing responsibilities enforcing Village ordinances and performing other duties that do not require physical arrest and/or do not relate to crime in progress.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • At least one (1) year of prior related experience in work involving public contact is required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public.
  • Must successfully complete LEADS certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must complete all other in-house training as directed.
  • Must be able to safely operate Village vehicles in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work under stressful situations involving public contact.
  • Must be able to work effectively independently with little supervision or as a team member and within the guidelines of standard operating procedures, department rules and regulations, and within the scope of authority for the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior public safety experience is preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will be familiar with public safety, have an interest in serving the community, and be dedicated to supporting the operations of the police department in a non-sworn position.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol the Village utilizing a motorized vehicle and observe vehicles and pedestrians reporting suspicious circumstances or other situations requiring police intervention.
  • Identify traffic hazards and either mitigate them or notify proper authority.
  • Remove illegal signs placed throughout the Village.
  • Enforce municipal ordinances relating to non-criminal complaints.
  • Give information and provide assistance to the public.
  • Write and issue non-traffic citations.
  • Attend court as required.
  • Prepare reports on assigned incidents using desktop computers or mobile data terminals.
  • Provide a variety of specialized services including motorist assistance, assisting crossing guards at school crossings, traffic control and direction (including Hollywood Casino Amphitheater).
  • Provide vacation house watch services and security checks.
  • Conduct police department station tours.
  • Fingerprint individuals for non-criminal purposes.
  • Assist officers in lock up with prisoner processing.
  • Assist with the police fleet of vehicles transporting police vehicles to Public Works or other service providers for cleaning, maintenance, and repair.
