About The Position

The following opportunity is open ONLY to current King County employees. Join our dedicated Volunteer Program, under the Community Investments & Engagement Section and help connect people to parks through outdoor leadership, environmental restoration, volunteer engagement, and community education. We are seeking a creative and collaborative leader to serve as Community Restoration Project Manager (Project/Program Manager II – PPM-II). In addition to the current opening, this recruitment may be used to establish a pool of qualified candidates to fill future Project/Program Manager II career service and term-limited temporary openings within the Parks Division or throughout the Department of Natural Resources & Parks (DNRP) over the next six months. The Community Restoration Project Manager will lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of impactful environmental service-learning projects throughout King County Parks, managing approximately 4–6 projects each month in collaboration with Parks staff, schools, volunteer groups, and community partners. This dynamic role combines strategic planning, partnership-building, outreach, and hands-on outdoor leadership, offering variety, creativity, and meaningful collaboration each week while helping deepen the impact of community restoration efforts across the region. As a key member of a small, collaborative team, you will support program operations, logistics, and engagement efforts that advance environmental stewardship, equity, wellness, and connection to parks, while contributing to major County initiatives including the Parks Open Space Plan, Land Conservation Initiative priorities, the current Parks Levy, and the Parks Equity and Social Justice Plan. This position follows a hybrid work model, blending remote and in-person work. The Community Investments & Engagement (CIE) Section connects King County Parks to the communities we serve through equitable investments, inclusive programs, and meaningful engagement. We oversee a wide range of initiatives designed to strengthen community relationships and ensure that County resources are distributed fairly and transparently. The Volunteer Program under CIE works to provide meaningful opportunities to connect people of all ages to our parks through hands-on service learning, environmental education opportunities and teen career pathway development programming, which includes: Community Restoration Volunteer Opportunities: building engaged and connected communities, learning and caring for our Parks through environmental service-learning projects. Youth Conservation Corps: building pathways for a new general of park and environmental leaders through a paid summer internship program and alumni opportunities exploring environmental challenges and solutions while building job skills. School Collaboration: co-created programming, working closely with school staff to meet student needs and learning objectives to explore environmental learning and careers. Requirements

  • Candidates must be current King County employees to be considered for this position.
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in the following areas: Designing and leading full-scope high-quality environmental restoration service projects as primary leader and/or independently. Candidate experience should include full restoration cycle planning for volunteer restoration sites; including identification and planning for noxious weed removal, strategy for ongoing weed maintenance and installation of plants indigenous to the northwest.
  • Developing mutually beneficial community and organizational relationships with the goal of connecting the public more deeply to the outdoor spaces
  • Working directly with youth and young adults in outdoor settings through environmental education and hands-on restoration service learning, including identifying and teaching others about indigenous Northwest plant species and noxious weeds.
  • Embedding social and racial equity into community engagement, restoration planning and implementation, volunteer leadership, and team collaboration.
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office products, online registration and data collection tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience planning, developing, implementing, and leading multi-year environmental restoration projects and/or formal planting plans for volunteer sites specifically in urban forests, buffer areas, multi-use landscapes, and/or active parks.
  • Experience working with databases, Power BI and/or online volunteer registration systems
  • Experience with advanced botany, restoration science current best practices and inclusive service-learning and environmental education pedagogy

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and lead 4-6 monthly environmental service-learning projects in partnership with Parks staff and community organizations, managing all phases including logistics, restoration planning, volunteer engagement, environmental education, data collection, and follow-up.
  • Build and maintain equitable partnerships with neighborhoods, schools, and community organizations to expand volunteer participation and strengthen community connections to restoration projects.
  • Collaborate with schools to plan and facilitate environmental service-learning projects and support development of environmental science, climate change, and restoration curriculum.
  • Participate in regional restoration, volunteerism, and internal planning meetings to strengthen cross-department collaboration and develop innovative community engagement opportunities within King County Parks.
  • Plan, lead, or support restoration education workshops and alumni programming with the Youth Conservation Corps, while identifying opportunities to better integrate Community Restoration, School Collaboration and Youth Conservation Corps programs.
