About The Position

An employee in this position will work directly for the Hickory Police Department, assigned to the Support Services Division as an unarmed uniformed security aide to assist in patrolling assigned areas throughout the City of Hickory. The assigned areas could vary in physical terrain and locations to include City parks and trail systems, the Downtown Social District, and the Hickory City Walks. An employee in this position will conduct security checks of these locations on foot, on a bicycle, or in a motor vehicle, to ensure the safety and security of citizens, personnel, and property. The employee will make notification to the proper authority if a situation arises. They will maintain radio communications with the Hickory Police Department Communications Center and file all necessary reports as required by the Hickory Police Department. An employee in this position will conduct traffic crash investigations throughout the city and will be responsible for following guidelines defined under NCGS 160A-499.6. This employee will be responsible for generating electronic reports via computer. This employee must be able to communicate with the general public in a face-to-face setting and give directions and answer inquiries. They will communicate internally with other employees face-to-face, by telephone, or by portable radio to receive instructions and information regarding daily duties.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Currently working on completing a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University.
  • Must meet the criteria for and be accepted to participate in the Appalachian State University – Hickory Police Department Community Response Police Cadet program.
  • Must meet the criteria for and be accepted to participate in Hickory Cadet Police Program in partnership with Appalachian State Hickory and Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC).
  • Apply during sophomore year for program.
  • Starting the Community Response Police Cadet program at the beginning of junior year.
  • Must have a valid Class "C" driver's license or higher.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Must undergo a thorough background investigation.
  • Must pass polygraph, psychological screening, and drug screen/physical.
  • Must be able to work part-time duty hours that may vary as scheduled.
  • Work 10-20 hours per week as a community response unit for a maximum of 999 part-time hours per year.
  • Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA.
  • Abide by all HPD policies and procedures.
  • Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.
