About The Position

The Community Outreach Intern at Common Roots BiHi Park will work with the Common Roots Urban Farm team and relevant partners to support creating a welcoming and vibrant space at Common Roots BiHi. They will do this through the support of community gardeners, volunteers and visitors, including helping with farm tours and events, and the planting and maintenance of common gardens and spaces.

Requirements

  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident legally entitled to work in Canada
  • LMDA eligible
  • Previously attached to the labour force for a minimum of 24 months
  • To be LMDA eligible, individuals must meet one of the following: Have a current Employment Insurance (EI) claim; Have received benefits under the EI emergency response benefit within the previous 60 months; Have had an EI claim that ended within the last 60 months; Have been employed with gross insurable earnings of $2000 or higher annually, in at least 5 of the last 10 years
  • Interest in or knowledge of gardening, local food systems, and/or community-based work.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to complete assigned tasks.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Comfortable with physical outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work some evening and weekend hours as required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Interest in environmental sustainability and the role of community networks in addressing environmental and social challenges.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with social media and newsletter platforms is an asset.
  • Access to a car or drivers license may be an asset but is not a requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with and support community gardeners, volunteers, and visitors, helping to create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Assist with garden activities including bed preparation, seeding, cultivation, maintenance, and harvest.
  • Assist with preparing produce and flowers for donation and with their distribution.
  • Support the planning and delivery of garden events, workshops, and educational programming.
  • Assist other EAC Food Team members with related tasks as needed to support farm operations.
