About The Position

The Garden Engagement Coordinator will work with the Common Roots Urban Farm team and relevant partners to support community engagement activities, garden improvements and volunteer participation at the Woodside Common Roots Urban farm site on the grounds of the Nova Scotia Hospital. The position is designed to provide hands-on learning in community-based food growing, facilitation, and public engagement.

Requirements

  • You are a Canadian citizen or permanent residents legally entitled to work in Canada
  • You are LMDA eligible (details below)
  • You have been previously attached to the labour force for a minimum of 24 months
  • Have a current Employment Insurance (EI) claim; OR Have received benefits under the EI emergency response benefit within the previous 60 months; OR Have had an EI claim that ended within the last 60 months; OR Have been employed with gross insurable earnings of $2000 or higher annually, in at least 5 of the last 10 years
  • Interest in or knowledge of gardening, local food systems, and/or community-based work.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to complete assigned tasks.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Comfortable with physical outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work some evening and weekend hours as required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Interest in environmental sustainability and the role of community networks in addressing environmental and social challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with garden activities including bed preparation, seeding, cultivation, maintenance, and harvests.
  • Engage with and support community gardeners, volunteers, and visitors, helping to create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Assist with washing, sorting, and post-harvest preparation of produce and flowers for donation and distribution.
  • Support the planning and delivery of garden events, workshops, and educational programming.
  • Assist other EAC Food Team members with related tasks as needed to support farm operations.
