About The Position

This role involves performing basic security work within a community jail setting, ensuring compliance with all local and state policies, regulations, and laws. The officer is responsible for prisoner welfare, representing the city/state at court proceedings, and is armed and trained in the use of deadly force. The position requires a high degree of independent judgment and carries significant liability. The Jail Officer II role includes administrative assistance, training of Jail Officer I's, ordering resources, and evidence control, in addition to basic security duties.

Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien intending to become a citizen.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor of moral turpitude, or a crime preventing legal firearm ownership.
  • Must be of satisfactory moral character.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen.
  • Two years experience in work requiring public contact.
  • Some knowledge of Alaska Criminal Code and Alaska Administrative Code pertaining to correction facilities.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver license.
  • Graduation from a law enforcement or correction academy meeting Alaska Police Standards Council standards OR graduation from a 120-hour Community Jail Officer training program within 12 months of hire (Jail Officer I).
  • Two years of experience as a Jail Officer I or alternative Correctional Officer with satisfactory reviews (Jail Officer II).
  • Working knowledge of Alaska Criminal Code and Alaska Administrative Code pertaining to correction facilities (Jail Officer II).
  • Graduation from a law enforcement or correction academy meeting Alaska Police Standards Council standards OR graduation from a 120-hour Community Jail Officer training program (Jail Officer II).
  • Standard Red Cross first aid and CPR card within 12 months of hire.
  • 8-hour training course in blood borne pathogen awareness within 12 months of hire and annually thereafter.

Responsibilities

  • Booking prisoners, including fingerprinting, photographing, searching, and incarcerating.
  • Maintaining prisoner records and ensuring incarcerations comply with court orders.
  • Maintaining jail security by searching visitors, packages, cells, and prisoners.
  • Providing basic and emergency first aid to prisoners, and dispensing prescribed medications.
  • Monitoring prisoners, serving meals, maintaining cell block security, and accommodating prisoner needs.
  • Maintaining detailed records of prisoner contact and activities.
  • Enforcing jail policies, procedures, and prisoner rules, and investigating violations.
  • Representing the city/state at court arraignments and making sentencing/bail recommendations.
  • Transporting prisoners for court appearances, transfers, and medical/dental facilities.
  • Performing minor maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment, and routine ground maintenance.
  • Ensuring general cleanliness of jail areas, booking room, kitchen, office, and vehicles.
  • Reviewing case files before arraignments and referring specific violations to Police Officers.
  • Dispensing prisoner money and personal property, and processing bail money and bonds.
  • Backing up police officers at crime scenes/ongoing incidents as required.
  • Interfacing with vendors for services like meals, laundry, and repairs.
  • Providing administrative assistance in jail operations (Jail Officer II).
  • Preparing statistical reports (Jail Officer II).
  • Preparing and reviewing billings for jail-related expenses (Jail Officer II).
  • Managing the accountability and control of evidence (Jail Officer II).
  • Training Community Jail Officer I's (Jail Officer II).
  • Ordering police and jail resources (Jail Officer II).
  • Recommending policy updates and developing procedures for jail administration (Jail Officer II).
