About The Position

The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) is dedicated to eliminating racial and other inequities that lead to premature mortality. CHECW operates with a deep understanding of historical and structural factors, aiming to increase awareness of the harm caused by unjust policies and to advocate for redress for impacted New York City communities. The center collaborates with community, faith-based, and healthcare organizations to address health inequities across various systems, focusing on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial factors. CHECW comprises several bureaus, including Neighborhood Health in Bronx, Brooklyn, Harlem, and Queens, as well as bureaus focused on Chronic Disease Prevention, Equitable Health Systems, and Finance and Administrative Services. The division's Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agency's Chief Equity Officer, overseeing the internal reform effort 'Race to Justice' to improve health outcomes for all New Yorkers. The Bureau of Queens Neighborhood Health specifically aims to enhance the Neighborhood Health Strategy and complement the work of other Neighborhood Health Bureaus. This role involves building and maintaining partnerships in Queens, with a particular focus on Jamaica and surrounding areas.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

  • Ability to maintain working relationships with culturally diverse community groups.
  • Knowledge of Queens local communities and local organization leadership, specifically Jamaica and surrounding areas.
  • Comfortable speaking in public.
  • Bilingual (written and spoken) Spanish, Bengali, Mandarin, or other language proficiency is encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain communication with local organizations and stakeholders to promote NYC Health Department programs and resources and to collect feedback on community needs.
  • Engage with community partners to promote health services, resources, and education.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with a broad variety of community partners.
  • Represent the bureau and the Jamaica Neighborhood Health Action Center at health fairs, meetings, and other external events occurring throughout the community.
  • Deliver presentations and workshops to diverse audiences throughout the community.
  • Maintain and report data that demonstrate community activities and results.
  • Support Bureau-wide programs and initiatives.
  • Participate in Just in Time training with NYC Health Department divisions that serve as a lead for a local/hyperlocal emergency response.
  • Distribute information and coordinate information sessions to community residents and businesses in response to emergency incidents.
  • Support agency efforts in building resilience in identified communities to mitigate impact from localized emergencies such as legionella outbreaks; conduct messaging, communicating and other efforts to make community aware of climate health preventive measures.
