About The Position

Anthropic is seeking a Community Engagement Manager to serve as its on-the-ground presence in Montana and Utah communities where its data centers are sited, built, and operated. The role is part of the Public Policy team and focuses on establishing Anthropic as a trusted, visible, and valued long-term community partner. It combines elements of communications and government affairs but is primarily centered on building relationships. The manager will connect Anthropic’s Policy and Infrastructure teams with local officials, community organizations, economic development partners, and residents. The role involves identifying concerns early, explaining technical and operational plans in locally relevant terms, and building coalitions that support responsible project development. The manager will also create repeatable engagement practices to guide Anthropic’s future infrastructure growth. The role requires regular travel within Montana and Utah, up to 50% of the time, often over long distances, and occasional travel to other Anthropic data center markets. Anthropic currently expects staff to work from one of its offices at least 25% of the time, though some roles may require more office time.

Requirements

  • Experience in community affairs, public affairs, economic development, government relations, local or state government, or a closely related field.
  • Direct experience working for or engaging with county and municipal governments and diverse community stakeholders on behalf of large infrastructure, construction, energy, or technology projects.
  • Working understanding of local politics and community dynamics.
  • Ability to build relationships and coalitions, earn trust among diverse stakeholders, and maintain relationships through difficult conversations.
  • Ability to represent a company credibly in public settings, including town halls, hearings, and press interviews.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including translating complex operational plans into plain language.
  • Ability to work independently, learn complex policy issues quickly, and manage multiple engagements across different markets.
  • Based in Montana or Utah, or willing to relocate to one of those states, and prepared to travel regularly across both states, including long drives.
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Field of study relevant to the role, as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 7 years of experience in community engagement on data center, utility, energy, or large-scale industrial infrastructure projects, or in local government.
  • Familiarity with county and municipal land use, zoning, and permitting processes in Montana and/or Utah, and with water rights and water use questions in the Mountain West.
  • Experience managing corporate social responsibility programs.
  • Established relationships with economic development, workforce, or civic organizations in the covered markets.
  • Experience working with real estate, legal, communications, and policy teams concurrently.
  • Experience working with Tribal governments and Native communities in Montana or Utah, including familiarity with consultation processes, Tribal sovereignty and treaty considerations, or community benefit and partnership agreements.
  • Genuine interest in the communities where the manager works.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain sustained relationships with local officials, planning and zoning bodies, state economic development agencies, community groups, civic leaders, educational institutions, and workforce partners in Montana and Utah data center markets.
  • Engage respectfully with Tribal governments and Native communities, recognizing Tribal sovereignty and supporting consultation and partnership efforts.
  • Develop and execute community engagement strategies covering site selection, pre-development, construction, and ongoing operations.
  • Build external coalitions, host education and listening sessions, and develop local solutions that deliver community benefits.
  • Represent Anthropic at public forums, town halls, planning hearings, community events, and in local media.
  • Monitor community sentiment and local political dynamics, advising internal teams on risks, opportunities, and appropriate engagement approaches.
  • Partner with the Real Estate and Infrastructure team to incorporate community input into project planning, communication, and delivery.
  • Work with the Communications team to develop proactive, locally relevant messaging.
  • Coordinate charitable giving, community investment, and economic development commitments, including managing nonprofit partner relationships.
  • Partner with the Energy and Sustainability team to explain environmental stewardship and address questions about power, water, land use, water availability and rights, and utility service for large electricity needs.
