About The Position

Anthropic is seeking a Community Engagement Manager in New York to join its Public Policy team. This role will serve as Anthropic's on-the-ground representative in communities where data centers are sited, built, and operated. The primary focus is on building relationships to make Anthropic a trusted, visible, and valued neighbor. The Community Engagement Manager will act as a liaison between Anthropic's Policy and Infrastructure teams and local stakeholders, including officials, community organizations, economic development partners, and residents. Responsibilities include surfacing concerns, translating technical plans into local benefits, and building coalitions for responsible and rapid development. This role will also contribute to developing the company's community engagement playbook for future market expansion. The position requires regular travel across New York State (up to 50%) and occasional travel to other Anthropic data center markets.

Requirements

  • Experience in community affairs, public affairs, economic development, government relations, local or state government, or a closely related field.
  • Direct experience working for or engaging with local governments and a broad set of community stakeholders on behalf of large infrastructure, construction, energy, or technology projects.
  • Working understanding of how local politics and community dynamics play out.
  • Skilled relationship and coalition builder who earns trust with diverse stakeholders and maintains relationships through difficult conversations.
  • Ability to represent a company credibly in public settings, including town halls, hearings, and press interviews.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex operational plans into plain language.
  • Ability to work independently, quickly learn complex policy issues, and manage multiple concurrent engagements across different markets.
  • Based in New York or willing to relocate there.
  • Prepared to travel regularly across the region.

Nice To Haves

  • 7+ years of experience in community engagement specifically on data center, utility, energy, or large-scale industrial infrastructure projects, or in local government.

  • Experience managing corporate social responsibility programs.
  • Established relationships with economic development, workforce, labor, or civic organizations in the markets this role covers.
  • Experience working with real estate, legal, communications, and policy teams simultaneously.
  • Experience engaging with Native nations in New York, including familiarity with consultation processes and Tribal sovereignty.
  • A genuine interest in the communities where you work.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain trusted, sustained relationships with town, village, city, and county elected officials and administrators, planning and zoning boards, local industrial development agencies, state agencies, economic development organizations, community groups, civic leaders, labor and building trades organizations, educational institutions, and workforce partners in the New York data center markets.
  • Develop and execute a community engagement strategy for each market, covering site selection, pre-development, construction, and ongoing operations.
  • Build external coalitions, host education and listening sessions, and design local solutions that deliver real benefits to the communities.
  • Represent Anthropic in public forums, town halls, planning hearings, community events, and local media.
  • Monitor community sentiment and local political dynamics, advising internal teams on risks, opportunities, and engagement strategy.
  • Partner with the Real Estate and Infrastructure team to integrate community input into project planning, communication, and delivery, including public comment and environmental review processes.
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to develop proactive, locally relevant messaging.
  • Coordinate charitable giving, community investment, and economic development commitments, including managing nonprofit partner relationships.
  • Partner with the Energy and Sustainability team to explain environmental stewardship approaches and address questions on power, water, and land use, considering New York's energy and climate policies and grid conditions.
