About The Position

The Community Engagement Coordinator supports HOPE’s local outreach ministry by strengthening relationships with community partners, creating meaningful opportunities for people to serve, and helping mobilize the church to live on mission throughout Metro Richmond. Working closely with the Outreach Lead and Discipleship + Outreach Pastor, this role provides relational, administrative, and ministry leadership to HOPE’s local partnerships, service initiatives, and community engagement efforts. This role helps advance HOPE’s mission of offering experiences, relationships, and places where people can find life and purpose through Jesus Christ and supports our Reach Families, Grow Leaders, Plant Churches, Go Far and Wide strategy by helping HOPE Reach people through meaningful presence and relationships in our community; Grow disciples by giving people opportunities to put their faith into action; Plant by developing volunteers and leaders who can multiply HOPE’s impact and supporting local church planting partnerships; and Go by mobilizing people to carry the Gospel beyond the walls of HOPE through service, partnership, and everyday mission. The Community Engagement Coordinator is both a relationship builder and an implementer, helping connect HOPE’s people, partners, and resources so that together we can serve our city well and participate in the Kingdom work already happening throughout Richmond.

Requirements

  • Experience in ministry, nonprofit, community engagement, volunteer leadership, or a related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain productive relationships with community organizations, ministry partners, volunteers, and staff.
  • Experience coordinating programs, projects, events, or volunteer initiatives.
  • Ability to recruit, equip, organize, and encourage volunteers.
  • Strong organizational and project-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through on details.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work effectively with limited supervision.
  • Experience managing or working within a ministry or program budget preferred.
  • Comfortable learning and using the technology and systems necessary to coordinate volunteers, partnerships, communications, and ministry activities.
  • Demonstrate a mature and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Fully support and actively contribute to HOPE’s mission, vision, values, theology, and ministry philosophy.
  • Demonstrate a genuine heart for local mission and a desire to see the Church actively engaged in the community.
  • Build relationships with warmth, humility, discernment, and consistency.
  • Exercise appropriate confidentiality and sound judgment in working with partners, volunteers, staff, and community members.
  • Approach ministry with flexibility, curiosity, and a willingness to learn, experiment, evaluate, and try again.

  • Work collaboratively across ministry areas, recognizing that effective community engagement requires partnership throughout HOPE.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Local Care Team in providing ongoing support, encouragement, and care to HOPE’s local ministry partners.
  • Manage incoming local partnership requests and coordinate appropriate responses—including financial support, volunteers, prayer, and communications—under the direction of the Outreach Lead.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local outreach and church planting partners, identifying opportunities for deeper ministry collaboration.
  • Develop relationships with ministry and church leaders throughout Richmond to encourage collaboration and shared Kingdom impact.
  • Participate on the partner evaluation team and assist with the annual evaluation of HOPE’s ministry partnerships.
  • Oversee and coordinate HOPE Gives, working with local partners and other organizations to identify meaningful opportunities for generosity and community impact.
  • Provide oversight and direction to the HOPE Goes Team as it helps mobilize people to serve alongside HOPE’s local partners.
  • Create accessible and meaningful pathways for people at HOPE to use their gifts and serve throughout Metro Richmond.
  • Support and coordinate the Carver Elementary Missional Hub to strengthen HOPE’s ongoing relationship and engagement with the school community.
  • Help engage and equip people to live missionally through Life on Mission Class, Life on Mission Labs, and other outreach training and experiences.
  • Support the Crisis Response Team in coordinating appropriate responses to spontaneous or urgent needs throughout Metro Richmond.
  • Collaborate with HOPE Kids, HOPE Students, and other ministry teams to develop service opportunities that connect people of all ages to HOPE’s local mission.
  • Recruit, equip, encourage, and support volunteers serving through HOPE’s local outreach ministries.
  • Help volunteers move from participating in individual service opportunities toward ongoing engagement and leadership.
  • Identify and develop volunteer leaders who can take increasing ownership of outreach teams, partnerships, and initiatives.
  • Create environments where volunteers understand how their service connects to HOPE’s mission and their own growth as disciples of Jesus.
  • Coordinate the administrative details necessary to support local outreach partnerships, events, service opportunities, and volunteer teams.
  • Maintain clear communication with ministry partners, volunteers, staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Steward ministry resources and budgeted funds carefully and in alignment with established priorities.
  • Track relevant information on partnerships, volunteer engagement, and outreach initiatives.
  • Assist with other projects and responsibilities as assigned by the Outreach Lead.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings, Outreach Team meetings, and other required staff gatherings.
