About The Position

The Family Services Worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, the Salvation Army. This position provides support to the food bank program and other programs provided by the community & family services.

Requirements

  • Completion of secondary school.
  • Minimum of three (3) months prior related experience working and/or volunteering in community-based programs, including experience working with multi-barriered persons.
  • Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Participate in orientation training.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period (Canada Summer Jobs Program requirement).
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment (Canada Summer Jobs Program requirement).
  • A valid Social Insurance Number (Canada Summer Jobs Program requirement).
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations (Canada Summer Jobs Program requirement).
  • An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.

Nice To Haves

  • Safe Food Handlers Certification is an asset.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Aid with processing, unloading, documenting, and sorting donations of food for the Food Bank program and assist with preparing donated items for distribution.
  • Support individuals/families accessing food bank to meet their wants/needs of food (assisting with points and shopping experience).
  • Process incoming food donations.
  • Daily cleaning of food bank and preparation for following day.
  • Organize and maintain general operation of storage space (sorting food, checking dates, stocking shelves).
  • Assist and support Food Drives and other fundraising events.
  • Inputting data into Link2Feed and other statistical reporting.
  • Ensure all clients are treated with dignity and respect, and maintain all information in confidence.
  • Receive phone calls for food bank intake.
  • Record statistical data in a clear, organized, and accurate manner.
  • Assist with set up/clean up of Food and other programs.
  • Adherence to all health and safety standards.
  • Assist with ensuring that the Food Bank is maintained in regard to organization, appearance, maintenance and general cleanliness and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required, in collaboration with Community Ministries Coordinator.
