About The Position

This position is responsible for installing, terminating, testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining the City’s physical communications infrastructure. This includes structured cabling, copper and fiber optic cable plant, telecommunications rooms, patch panels, cross-connects, and related low-voltage systems. The role also supports radio, telephone, television/video distribution, and associated communications systems, assists with troubleshooting door access systems, and supports audiovisual systems in council chambers and other designated facilities. Key duties involve performing system moves, adds, and changes; monitoring communications equipment for reliable operation and regulatory compliance; maintaining asset inventories, documentation, labeling, diagrams, and service records; assisting with evaluating replacement or upgraded equipment; and providing technical guidance to users and departments on proper equipment use and service requests. Other duties as required are also part of this role.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of FCC regulations and applicable industry standards.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic theory and application.
  • Knowledge of radio operating systems including Low Band, VHF, UHF, 800 MHz, and 900 MHz systems.
  • Knowledge of telephone and voice communications systems.
  • Knowledge of structured cabling systems and physical network infrastructure, including copper and fiber optic media.
  • Knowledge of television/video distribution technologies.
  • Knowledge of basic access control and audiovisual support concepts.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, test equipment, and safety practices associated with telecommunications and low-voltage systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, riser diagrams, and telecommunications plans.
  • Ability to install, terminate, label, test, and troubleshoot copper and fiber optic cabling and related communications equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve issues in radio, telephone, television/video, access control, and audiovisual support systems within the scope of the position.
  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation and inventories.
  • Ability to use specialized test equipment and hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical users.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in field and facility environments.
  • Constantly sees and hears.
  • Frequently uses a calculator, writes by hand, cleans, crawls, drives, kneels, sits, squats, stoops, twist body, walks, carries and lifts objects up to 20 lbs., pulls objects weighing up to 15 lbs.
  • Infrequently files, climbs and sorts.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license with a good driving record. Other state valid Driver’s License equivalent to Texas Class C with a good driving record will be considered. Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency, you must possess a valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation, drug/alcohol screen test and debt check for any monies owed to the City of Beaumont.

Nice To Haves

  • Specialized training in electronics, telecommunications, low-voltage systems, network cabling, or a closely related field.
  • An associate degree in electronics, telecommunications, information technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications, structured cabling, or related electronic communications systems is preferred.
  • A General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL), FCC license, fiber optic, structured cabling, or other relevant industry certification is preferred.
