Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Communications Technician in its Information Technology Division. This role supports the Lab’s telecom, network, and communications infrastructure by installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting structured cabling; supporting telephony and network service moves, adds, changes, and deletions; and managing telecommunications spaces, including power distribution, equipment racks, environmental monitoring, and cable management across the campus. Requirements

  • Combination of 1 to 2 years of relevant technical experience and/or education.
  • A minimum of 1 year of work experience in the field of telephone, networking cable, and circuit installation.
  • Demonstrated experience working under general supervision using established guidelines and standard operating procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrated experience in several of the following areas: Telecommunications plant and building wiring methods and practices, Inside building cable route planning, Categories 5 and 6 and TIA568B/C wiring installation standards and practices, Fiber optic cable installation and termination, Telephone and network circuit installation and testing using specialized test equipment, Firestop procedures and methods, Telephone closet backboard layout design and construction, BIX, M66 and AT&T punch down blocks; diagnosis, troubleshooting and repair of problems related to telephone sets and data devices, PBX telephone sets and data devices, Twisted pair Ethernet circuits.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of this position including field activity involving: Lift and pull heavy objects up to 50 lbs. Stooping, bending and crawling in confined areas, climbing ladders and stairs. Working in noisy, dusty, dirty and slippery areas where hardhats are required.
  • Must be available for occasional overtime work that may be scheduled for evenings, early mornings, weekends, or holidays.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers as to status and completion of projects and service orders.
  • Combination of 2 to 4 years of relevant technical experience and/or education.
  • A minimum of two years of work experience in the field of telephone, networking cable, and circuit installation.
  • Demonstrated experience working under general supervision using established guidelines and standard operating procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to independently test or extend lines to buildings from the main demarcation point.
  • Experience with network troubleshooting including one or more of DHCP, Voice VLAN, VoIP, and WiFi.
  • General knowledge and understanding of T1 communications lines.
  • Able to independently diagnose and test problems related to underground wiring or splices and recommend areas of concern that may require immediate attention for repair.
  • Knowledge of industry standard fire protection, HVAC, and Electrical System

Responsibilities

  • Install fiber and copper communications cable used inside buildings from the building backbone to individual station drops.
  • Install and terminate fiber and copper outside plant communications cable used between buildings.
  • Troubleshoot problems related to telephone devices and circuits.
  • Diagnose and repair indoor and outdoor plant cable and splices.
  • Construct, test and document fiber circuits.
  • On a daily basis, complete Move / Add / Change requests for telephone and network devices installed on inside building communications wiring.
  • Work with other individuals during cable installations ensuring that all parties assisting with the installation are working safely, efficiently, and effectively.
  • Works on assignments that are semi-routine in nature but recognizes the need for occasional deviation from accepted practice.
  • Normally receives little instruction on routine daily work, general instructions on newly introduced assignments.
  • Handle moderately complex assignments, using judgment to resolve issues and make recommendations.
