Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Communications and Engagement, you will lead a talented team of communications professionals, provide strategic advice to senior leaders, and champion innovative, audience-focused communications that strengthen engagement, build trust and support organizational goals.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary Degree in Communications, Public Relations or a related discipline
  • 7 years of experience working in a communications role, with demonstrated expertise and experience in corporate branding and strategic communication planning
  • Minimum of 2 years of leadership experience with demonstrated ability to inspire and lead teams through change, building momentum around a shared vision while fostering a collaborative, positive, and engaged team culture
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills with experience in positively influencing others
  • Able to work under pressure, strong political acumen and the ability to manage sensitive issues with discretion and professionalism
  • Proven ability to establish trusted partnerships across all levels of the organization and support the achievement of departmental priorities
  • Systems-thinking mindset and the ability to connect day-to-day work to broader organizational goals
  • Able to navigate complex issues and develop strategic communication responses
  • Wide range of writing and editing skills/experience (e.g. copywriting, speech writing, web, editorial)

Nice To Haves

  • Incident Command System training and experience in crisis communication planning and management is preferred
  • Government, political or related municipal experience is preferred
  • Member of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and/or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Strategic communications planning and execution by collaborating closely with departments the branch supports to evaluate communication needs and determine necessary resources for effective support
  • Collaborate with the Manager to develop and implement a comprehensive corporate communications strategy that aligns with strategic goals and outcomes, supports departmental objectives, and promotes collaboration and operational efficiencies across the organization
  • Develop communication plans to advance corporate priorities and address specific needs of departments the branch supports, aiming to maximize resource efficiency and impact
  • Identify and respond to emerging issues and opportunities, formulating strategies to ensure high communication standards, and maintaining quality control and consistency in all deliverables
  • Regularly assess the effectiveness of communication strategies and practices, making necessary adjustments to enhance overall communication effectiveness and alignment with organizational goals
  • Serve as a key resource, offering expert advice and comprehensive communication services including publicity, promotion, advertising, media relations and web writing
  • Craft and produce compelling communication materials, such as key messages, FAQs and copy for various platforms including print, web, media outlets, advertising, presentations and display content
  • Act as a collaborative partner for County communicators, offering advice, perspective and a forum to test ideas, discuss scenarios and refine communications approaches, as well as provide guidance on overall corporate strategic direction
  • Coordinate communication efforts for cross-departmental or cross-municipal initiatives, fostering unified messaging and impactful outreach
  • Lead and develop a high-performing communications team through coaching, feedback, and professional development; establish clear priorities and expectations; foster collaboration and innovation; and address issues proactively to ensure effective service delivery
  • Play a critical role in the Emergency Operations Centre/Information Management Team by planning and executing effective communications during a crisis, including ensuring timely and accurate dissemination of information
  • Participate in the PIO (Public Information Officer) on-call rotation for addressing after-hours issues and emergent communication needs, providing prompt and effective support
