About The Position

FairVote is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing electoral reforms to promote democracy. The organization is recognized for its thought leadership, in-depth research, policy development, and influence on policy debates at federal and state levels. FairVote is a primary advocate for ranked choice voting (RCV) and proportional RCV, aiming to enhance voter choice, representation, and governance. Currently, nearly 14 million voters have access to RCV in their elections, a growth FairVote has significantly influenced.

The Communications Intern will gain valuable experience within FairVote's Communications Department. Responsibilities may include writing blog posts, social media content, opinion pieces, and press releases; conducting research on election-related topics; and managing daily media monitoring for electoral reform news. This internship is ideal for current undergraduate or graduate students, or recent graduates who are passionate about voting rights and electoral reform, and have a keen interest in media and communications. Prior coursework in political science, communications, or related fields is advantageous.

• Strong research, writing, and communications skills
• Effective problem-solving skills
• Ability to multitask and juggle competing deadlines
• Interest in democracy reform
• Understanding of, and passion for, FairVote’s policy areas
• Desire to learn more about building advocacy coalitions
• Open to rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, or recent graduates

Nice To Haves

• Coursework in political science, communications, and other relevant fields is preferred.
• Coursework/major in political science or communications/writing disciplines preferred.

Responsibilities

• Writing for the FairVote website and other platforms
• Creating content for social media accounts
• Researching topics related to elections and reform
• Managing FairVote’s media monitoring for electoral reform news
• Helping compile media lists and identify media outlets for particular stories or press releases
• Following online political conversations and advising FairVote staff on opportunities to engage
• Other duties as assigned
